Subject: Mitt Romney-- what a JOKE!
That was some seriously funny stuff that Romney delivered at the Al Smith dinner last night. There are rumors Dennis Miller wrote it:

“You know, with or without all the dignitaries that are here, the Al Smith dinner surely lives up to its billing. Usually when I get invited to gatherings like this, it's just to be the designated driver.”

“And by the way in -- in the spirit of Sesame Street, the president's remarks tonight are brought to you but the letter 'O' and the number $16 trillion.”

I listened to it earlier this morning and it was pretty funny.  I was actually amazed at how sharp some of the comments were towards team O.  I know they try to play cordial at these events but Romney certainly pushed the limit.

I haven't had a chance to listen to Obama's monologue yet.

I caught just a minute or so on NPR, so I have to listen to the rest after work. But Obama said something along the lines of learning that there are worse things on your anniversary than forgetting to get your wife a present. And also that he did better in the second debate because he got so much rest during the first one. Romney also said something about his secret to success being "first, don't drink any alcohol for 65 years..."

At the end of the dinner, Cardinal Dolan reflected on Al Smith's work.

He spoke of Smith's concern for the uns.
No, not the nuns. The uns.

He said:

"the unemployed,
the uninsured,
the unwanted,
the unwed mother,
the innocent, fragile unborn baby in her womb,
the undocumented,
the un-housed,
the unhealthy,
the unfed,
the undereducated.
Government, Al Smith believed, should be on the side of these uns.”

He went on to say that Smith believed government should partner
with family, church, organizations, and community.
Not intruding or opposing since when all is said and done
it's in God we trust, not government.

Subtle, isn't he?

On a related note, Dolan is one of the funniest guys you could ever meet. Really dry sense of humor, and incredibly engaging. Talk about a guy you'd want to drink a couple of beers with (and he's more than happy to indulge!)

Cardinal Dolan said that if the Democrats and Republicans want to see what a big tent looks like
they should look to the Catholic Church, since the Church has both Ryan and Biden as members.

Cardinal Dolan is papabile, someone seen as a possible future pope.

One of the funny lines last night is when Romney said something about
Obama being at odds with Dolan, and to watch for whether Obama's wine would turn to water
or for that matter if Romney's water would turn to wine.  Took me a minute to get that one.

A couple of Obama's that I remember:

"After my foreign trip in 2008, I was attacked as a celebrity because I was so popular with our allies overseas. I have to say, I'm impressed by how well Gov. Romney has avoided that problem."

Both candidates took shots at Joe Biden. I don’t remember what Obama said, word for word, but it was something like, “You know, I sometimes hear that I’m too inexperienced to be president and that I’m not qualified to hold this office. And when I hear that, I usually say, ‘Quiet, Joe. I’m trying to run cabinet meeting’”.

Romney had a great line, where he said something like, "Both of us have been lucky to have someone at our sides, supporting us throughout this campaign. I have been so fortunate to have my wife, Ann. And of course, the President has President Clinton."

I thought they were both pretty good, granted they probably didn't write it. It is nice to see that they can actually get along with each other still. I liked when Obama said this will be his last time to run no matter what and he's trying to drink it up, but Mayor Bloomberg will only let him have 16oz at a time.

They were both hilarious. I'm pretty sure I could sense John Stewart in Obama's and Dennis Miller in Romneys.

My favorite was actually when Romney made fun of himself (this is what Ann and I wear at home)...

BOTH had their jabs.  A little biasness there to think that Romney was the only jokester.
