Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() RIP, Pat. However, his legacy: Kicker. Commentator. Drunk. Think we can do better. Not trying to crap on the thread or his history / legacy, which is significant. I enjoyed every bit of his commentary, for a time. I just don't think he's someone we hold up as an icon of what we want the next guy to be. Just me. |

![]() | ![]() Good one Rick. Al Michaels is pretty solid. He made John Madden look good. |

Resident Curmudgeon ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, as a fellow former "drunk," I'm less judgmental, and have nothing but respect for someone who, with the help of friends and family, successfully fought that demon. From the article in the OP: It was after the 1992 Masters that friends, CBS colleagues and family met Summerall one night in Philadelphia and convinced him during an emotional intervention that he desperately needed help to combat his drinking. Summerall spent five weeks at the Betty Ford Center in Palm Springs, Calif. He never drank again. At the annual Christmas party he and his wife, Cheri, hosted at Amazing Grace, their Southlake home, guests were offered nothing stronger than soft drinks and coffee. “My time at Betty Ford saved my life,” Summerall frequently volunteered in conversation. RIP, Mr. Summerall.

Never knew that about him. I always cringed when he and Madden were in the booth as neither seemingly knew who had the ball or was playing. I think the Cowboys were playing the Giants every week by default. Entertaining, but never enlightening commentary. Not "just you" Rick. I don't understand why and how Joe Buck and Troy Aikmen get the criticism they do. At least they seem to follow and intelligently report the game. Edited by pitt83 2013-04-17 7:05 AM |

No complaints with Pat. Admire anyone that can get their life on a better track. And yes, I really like Buck and Aikmen. Wasn't a big fan of him when he played, but both of them are head and shoulders above many. I want to put a brick through my TV every time I hear Dierdork. Edited by powerman 2013-04-17 8:59 AM |

But the catch phrase "Whammy" and "Whoh Nelly" are taken and anything I'd use starts with "Holy effin...." and that's not gonna work. |
