Subject: Second Bike - Kona Jake???
I'm in the market for a second bike (my current bike is a 2007 QR Tequilo but winters New England and lots of crap on the road don't really bode well for riding the Tequilo outside during the winter).  I'm thinking I should go with a cyclocross bike as my second/winter bike.  A guy at the bike store suggested the Kona Jake, which looks good, but I really dont know any better.  Any suggestions for a sturdy second bike in the $800-ish price range???

If you are not actually going to ride off pavement, a cheap road bike with some 700x32's might be a good alternative.   Maybe something used or in the Sora/Tiagra component level would be a nice fit.    If you want something bulletproof, I really like the Bianchi Volpe.  It's a Cyclocross/Touring/Commuter bike.

I break things easily.  Bullet proof is definately a good attribute.

I chose the Kona Jake as my 2nd bike, and I use it specifically for commuting and as my winter ride.  Like you, I wanted something that was a little sturdier.. and one that would be less likely to be stolen.

It's not what I would call a "perfect bike", but it's great for what I need it for.  I've got fenders & lights on it, and changed out the knobbly cyclocross tires for touring tires suitable for commuting/light trails.

The only thing I would say is that if you're used to higher end components (I have 105/ultegra on my road bike), you might feel the difference with the sora/tiagra components on the Jake.  It's nothing major, but it just doesn't shift quite as nicely as the higher end stuff.

Kona Jake, Fuji 'Cross, or one of the Redline's would suit.  Or you could go with a MTB...

I have full Dura Ace right now, so I figure I'm in for a little letdown on the shifting, but it just doesn't seem worthwhile to pay for the better compnents on a "winter" bike.  So long as it'll let me get rides in outside during the winter, I should be good.  I thought about a MTB, but hauling it (and my big behind) up hills kind of scares me.

I have a '00 Kona Jake the Snake and LOVE it. I put the most miles on this bike. I use it mostly as a commuter with the knobbies, as my route has both dirt trails and paved bike paths. I got a second wheelset for it with slicks for pure paved bike path rides. Before I turned it into a commuter I used it on the MTB trails. My bike has been hammered and has held up really well. As components have gotten older and worn out I've upgraded them (new, stubby STI shifters are on their way this week). It's a great bike and stands up well to a thrashing. I love the looks people give me when I hop off of curbs with it.

Honestly, if you have an extra $200, I would recommend getting the Jake the Snake model. It's 105 (I believe?).. and definitely closer to what you're used to, component-wise. Don't get me wrong - the sora shifters will work, and they'll get you from point A to point B... they just won't shift as well, or feel as nice in your hands.

I have a Cross bike (Redline) as my winter, rain, snow, baby trailer puller... bike. I even race Cross on it.

It's my favorite bike to ride. CX bikes ride more like touring bikes, but you can jump curbs, bomb down stairs, do some single track with them. Kinda like the SUVs of the cycle world.

Kona is a real good choice. If you can find it (any shop supposedly can order it), Van Dessel is really nice too. Of course, fit is first, but you've been around and know that! It's going to feel weird to get on at first. Cross bikes are a bit higher than a standard road bike. The reach, angles, etc. are all very different than your QR. It's not wrong, just different. I'm riding my CX, road and tri bike on different days this month and every time I get on, it's an adjustment.

I have a Surly Cross Check with full fenders, racks, panniers and MTB gearing; a full on touring build. I wouldn't buy it again; it weighs in at 32lbs. I ride year round in SE-CT; even in March with slush piles, sand and spring thaw. Fenders are crucial for a winter bike. The tires have less rolling resistance than you think; ride what comes on the bike and modulate the pressure based on conditions. Yes a smooth commuter 32 tire might roll better, but it's not like you need to set PR's on this.

IMHO: A MTB isn't as good a choice for primarily road use. A bike for every purpose and a purpose for every bike.

A good, purposefully built cyclocross bike is great. That and would you consider pinning a number on for 45min + 1 lap of pain in November? It's really fun

Pig Iron in Glastonbury told me that they could order any Kon for me.  I think I'm going to go with a Kona. Now the question becomes whether its worth the extra $500 to upgrade from the Kona Jake to the Jake the Snake (which would give me 105 components).

Upgrade worth depends on your purpose. If you're going to race (ie: break stuff weekly), then don't upgrade. You'll be buying new shortly anyway.

I love 105 for the value / performance and wouldn't buy a bike with less than that. If your budget allows, do it. Plus 105 is 10sped so you get complete road pit wheels for free or can use your road wheels as cross pit wheels. Cassettes are likely different, but not much. You could simply grab new wheels and fix a flat later if you're running late for a group ride.

That and which one has the better color? If the JTS is cooler, get that

I know.  I like the neon green color of the JTS.  I just have to fib and tell my boyfriend that it only costs $800.  Seeing that I'll be doing mostly road riding, I dont think I'll be breaking much and the 105 drivetrain is likely worth it.
