So, Anna and I are mulling over the idea of doing a road trip to do one last Olympic for the year. We're considering the Peregrine Charities Tri on September 28th in Cedar Falls/Waterloo Iowa. My husband says it's super flat. (He grew up right across the river from this park.) He said the run would be really beautiful - all through the woods of the park.

Anyone interested in one more.....?

About then i would be ready for an oly, but it is the week before the Twin Cities Marathon (which i hope to be ready for). Even so, two weekend trips of almost 700 miles each, adds up quickly. Good Luck

Well I did Pigman last year- the half and I thought it was near Cedar Hills (could be wrong) and it was FAR from flat.   Just an FYI

Have fun

Isn't Pigman in Ohio? Or is that just the Flying Pig Marathon?

I found out about this one a few weeks ago looking for one more olympic this year and am not committed yet....but still considering.

Somewhat troublesome is the warning about the water quality! I've seen warnings before, but this seems they're overly reassuring (cautious yikes).  I'll heed the Madison lakes warnings as those are day-to-day, but it's a little tougher that they could have a water quality issue with their lake for "weeks."  Or am I being too paranoid?

From the race website:

Water quality in George Wyth Lake will be tested for safety several times in the weeks leading up to the race. If water quality is deemed to be unsafe for race day, the event will be a 3.0 mile run – 22 mile bike – 3.0 mile run duathlon. Athletes will be notified of any changes as soon as possible after determination is made.

Pigman is near Cedar Rapids. Cedar Falls is further West.

I think the warning is because this area was all under water in the floods this summer. The park isn't fully open yet. The beach area is still closed, but they reconfigured the swim to start from the boat launch.

I'm not 100% committed yet, either. But, I know I don't want to do Pleasant Prairie or Lake Geneva, and I haven't found any other Olympics reasonably near by.

Ah, okay, makes sense.

What is the issue with Lake Geneva?  I've read about the organization for Lake Geneva - and the cost is quite high.  So as to not get off-topic, why would you choose Peregrine over Lake Geneva?

I've heard that the organizer is a real jerk and that the race is notoriously unorganized. I've heard horror stories of people getting lost or sent on the wrong course at his races. USAT pulled his sanctioning last year, which you know means it's not a well-run race. I run mostly non-USAT races and they're fine. But never going for sanctioning is different than having had it and having had it yanked.

Lodging is also stupid expensive around Lake Geneva, because it's a resort area.

Oh, and have I mentioned that it's supposed to have killer hills. Maybe I'm just a-scared of the hills. ;P

There's one killer hill on the run at LG, but that's not the reason I won't do it again. X2 on all the reasons above, plus security in transition--any Joe Schmo can walk right in and trade bikes with you.

Deanna...pretty much a ditto...yes on the hills! That said, it is a GOOD "challenge yourself" race. Dobbs just doesn't have enough volunteers, for probably numerous reasons. I still do some of his races, due to convenience and challenge. He does have nice awards and food. If you just pay attention AHEAD of time to the course, and during it, you will be fine!

I guess I will look more strongly at Peregrine.  At least it's a couple weeks away from Devil's Lake tri which would make it easier to plan for.
