Subject: Knee problem

Ok, so during today's run after about 5 miles my left knee started aching.  No sharp pain, more of a tightening of the tendons on the back side of my knee on either side.  I slowed my pace and just tried to keep it easy.  At 7.5 my knee just seemed to lock up - it was very painful - very hard to bend.  I stretched a little, rubbed it a bit and it helped, but then as soon as I started walking it really hurt.  I've never had an issue like this before.  It doesn't feel like anything is grinding and it doesn't hurt when I'm at rest.  I got home and iced and elevated it and that's helped.

I'm not sure if its the patella syndrome that I've seen people comment on or if its something muscular.  If I sit down and keep my knee bent after a few minutes it seems to tighten up so when I stand up I have to slowly stretch it back out.  I suppose I'll call my sports doc tomorrow to have him check it out.  Anybody else experience anything like this?

Do you have a foam roller?  If not, I would strongly encourage you to buy one right away and roll your IT bands.  The rollers are about $20 at most running stores - it'll be the best money you ever spend.  Good luck!

Thanks Brickey.  I did some Googling of IT syndrome and that's really what this sounds like.  I've also got fairly flat feet and already have Sorbothane inserts, but maybe I need something a bit more aggressive.  I'll pick up one of those rollers too and start focussing on stretching more.  I wonder also if the increase in my time on the trainer has had any affect.  Even though its low impact, do you think that might have contributed?  I hate to let down Team 2 in the biking challenge but I sure as hell don't want to jeapordize all of my training so I'm not ready for Steelhead.

You're not going to like this answer, but yea, it may be ITBS, and if it is, it can SUCK! I've been dealing with it for 14 months! If you're lucky, unlike me, stretching, foam rolling, ibuprofen and ice will take care of it. GOOD LUCK.

Hmm, that sure sounds familiar. From your description and my experience with ITBS, it could be what's ailing you. I first experienced that tightening behind the knee then severe knee pain at the end of last season after massively upping my running and biking, both in volume and intensity for the summer months. Improper running shoes and/or bike fit plus the increase in training can also be factors. If it's ITBS, then I strongly agree that the foam roller is the way to go, as Brickey knows well (rumor has it he carries his around like a blankey at night A doctor also prescribed me anti-inflammatory meds to curb the swelling. Nasty bugger the ITBS, hopefully you'll be able to get it under control soon.

Good luck at the doc...I am curious to hear what he says...I"ve had my own knee issues, but haven't done the doctor visit as of yet.  Hope it's something easy to fix!

What's a sport doc?  We don't have those with our HMO plan, we get the standard RICE BS along with a script for 800 motrins or Naproxen and call me back in 2 to 3 weeks speech.

Good luck with your appt Eric.

I'm a big fan of ART (www.activerelease.com) and go to Dr. Karen Slota in Livonia (734-748-6602).  I go anytime I have a muscular issue and sometimes just for maintenance.  She works with tons of runners and triathletes and got us through 2 HIMs and an IM injury-free.

Fair warning though...if it is your IT band and she works on it...it will HURT.  Bad.  But it will get better.

Thanks curegirl I may do that.

I just got back from the doctor and he thinks that its my IT band.  He's given me a script for PT at a place right around the corner from me.  I'll start out with that and see how it goes.  He also said that he's had a lot of luck with injections.  I asked whether it was more of a temporary fix to get an athlete through a race, but he said no, that what he's been seeing is that they can actually have a long term affect.  But he recommended starting with therapy first and see how that goes.  He also didn't seem to think that it'd be a problem running the Martian 1/2 marathon, which is good.

So I'll be off the bike and running for probably 5-6 days and doing a whole lot of swimming in the meantime.  Don't want to go much more than that, but also don't want to end up with a season-ending injury either.  Will just have to play it by ear.

Eric,

Just glancing at your logs, looks like you've had a pretty good increase in bike mileage over the past couple of weeks while your run mileage is fairly consistent.  I'd be VERY suspicious of your bike fit on this.  Be careful getting back into it as it will just flare right back up if your fit is bad and causing the irritation.  From a fellow athlete who fights ITBS issues, it sucks, be sure and do everything you can to stay on top of it!

Good point - think maybe I should give Tom a call at BikeSport and have the fit checked.  One thing I've noticed is that my left leg seems to turn in a bit on the pedal. The reason I noticed this is because the velcro strap for the shoe hits the arm of the pedal.  When I was riding outside it was real bad and a few times the strap caught and came undone.  The right foot doesn't do this at all.

On a semi-related note, for those of you that have experienced ITBS, has anyone tried acupuncture to relieve the inflammation and pain? I have use it successfully for other inflammatory problems but not specifically for this.  It has worked well for me in the past.  Just curious to know.
