![]() Swim
Comments: There was one other guy who was late and we both had to go at the very end. We were both slotted to get in the first 100 so we knew we were faster than those ahead of us and let them finish a lap before we started. The last girl started to freak out on her first lap and we waited to let her calm down and keep going before we jumped in so as not to make things worse on her. I was last in and had the lane all to myself which was nice. Not one lap in and my timing chip comes off. What else will go wrong today? Jack didn't snap the band on and I forgot to check before I started. Stood in the water and fixed it. Really glad I was last in the water now. Swam the rest without a hitch. What would you do differently?: Double check my chip before every race from now on. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Finished the swim at the same time as another guy. The volunteers were pulling him out so I pulled myself over the edge and was off and running. I didn't get to setup my transition how I would have liked and everyone else's bikes were back and crowding everything when I was already flustered after a bad morning. I skipped putting on socks and just got my shoes on and ran as fast as possible. What would you do differently?: Show up on time. Set things up right. ![]() Bike
Comments: Great ride for me. My heart was still racing and mentally I wasn't there yet. Rode easy at first and just got settled in. I got into my groove right before the first hill. Since I started last I had plenty of people ahead to pass and that's my favorite part of the bike leg. Stood up out of the saddle on virtually all of the up hills and attacked even harder on the down hills. I could really feel my quads hurting from yesterday but it went away after the first 7 miles. Finished very strong and had no problems getting out of my shoes before dismount. What would you do differently?: Rest properly. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: I skipped putting on socks in T1 and that made it much harder to get my shoes on in T2. Small snag getting my flag pole together, but only lost a few seconds. What would you do differently?: Wear socks. ![]() Run
Comments: Started out at what I thought was way too fast, but ended up holding very close to that pace throughout. I knew there was a cameraman waiting for me on this part so I wanted to try and push hard for my 15 minutes of fame. Surprisingly good run for me. What would you do differently?: Start out slower and increase the pace as I go. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Had a bottle of water, talked with some friends, ate a banana and some pasta, checked the results and walked around until the awards ceremony. What limited your ability to perform faster: Fatigue, lack of sleep, mental focus, timeliness. Event comments: I got 64th overall and 3rd in my age group (out of more than 3 for once!) which was totally unexpected. Especially considering my morning. First on the bike in my age group was what I really wanted and I got it by 2 full minutes. Overall this turned out to be a good day. Last updated: 2005-07-16 12:00 AM

AHHHHH!!!!! I over slept by 3 HOURS!!!!! I wake up and look outside: sunlight! It's late. Too late. I look at my watch and it's 6:45. Race start is at 7:15 and it's an hour and a half drive from my house. I haven't had a tri for a month and I'm itching to race. Plus the Dallas Morning News is sending a photographer to this race to take my photo for an upcoming story. I can't miss this race! It's a pool swim, so maybe I have a chance. I throw my stuff in the Jeep and a minute later I'm on the highway doing 110MPH. I speed all the way there and make it about 45 minutes late. I run around transition and the pool looking for Jack (the race director) to see if I can still race. He says I can as long as I don't mind being last in the swim. I still get to run! Perfect! I get my gear and Jack does the body marking and puts on my chip. He finds a small spot in transition for my stuff and I'm set. Even had time to meet the lovely Mandi Gayle as she was waiting for her turn to get in the pool.
I ran from where I parked across the street to the YMCA. Then ran around the building looking for Jack (the race director).
