Expert  916   San mateo California |  Subject: Nobel Peace price nominees...well apparently some congressmen, professors and people allowed to nominate candidates for the Nobel peace price think that the Imprisoned Chinese dissident and human rights activist Wei Jinsheg or the Former president Jimmy carter with all of his efforts toward peace are in the same league as a convicted killer in death row and former gang memeber (Stanley Tokie Williams) and a talk show hostess (Oprah). In these days who does not have a nobel peace nomination.... Read the story here . I think the Nobel Peace nominees should be people/institution that has done incredible work toward World Peace as oppossed to gang violence, which is insignificant when compared to other conflicts in the world. |

Not excusing Tookie Williams' crimes, but the guy has done some fairly amazing work to steer kids away from the gang he created. Nope only professors of History, political science and elected officials (congressmen, presidents and others) are allow to nominate people for the Nobel Peace price... The gang dude is responsible for so many murders and crime..... writting a few books will never erase the fact that what he started is still alive muredering, raping, kidnapping, toruturing.. What he has done cannot be erased just because now he had a change of heart.. What he is doing now will never, ever be able ro replace or to mend the damage that HE HAS caused. I'd build orphanages, schools etc too, if I were a billionaire. There is an interesting kernel of a discussion regarding rehabilitation versus punishment here. Is rehabilitation possible, or desirable for murderers, even cold blooded gang murderers? Is prison punishment only, or does society wish to rehabilitate criminals as well? Tookie Williams is a good example. That being said, we certainly don't do a good job of it. You can argue whether we should or should not be rehabing prisoners, but if the stated goal of the system is to rehab, we should do better. Death penalty. Don't like it. I find it intertesting that so many Christians support it. As a Christian, I don't. It costs far more money to execute someone than it does to incarerate them for life, and you could argue that life in prison is much worse punishment than execution.
