Our house strives to be encouraging.  It just doesn't usually happen with each other.  Sibling rivalry takes over and being nice to each other goes out the window.  BUT I've been told that we have very well mannered boys when we are in public.

The other week I was running up on the Y indoor track and this man who had passed me a dozen plus times, passes me again only this he says "good job keep it up"... those 5 words got me thru my run.

today I said those words to another person, maybe it helped her thru her run.

I fun to spread enthusiasm for the sport to newbies and curious folk. It makes me more motivated to go out and do my best.

Hearing "good work!" from an elite passing me on the bike course is encouraging, humbling and sometimes frustrating. Yet, it reminds me to take more effort to acknowledge others in every setting, not just in racing/training.

Yay!  I try to do that when I'm out running.

One hot hot day last summer, we were running on the path around Spring Lake, and as I was running along the dam portion, I saw an older woman walking very slowly up the ramp.  As I jogged by, I called out, "Way to keep moving forward!  Good job!"

Later, as Eric and were down by the lake, stretching and getting our stuff together,  she came up and said, "Thank you for saying something so nice back there.  I just had a stroke, and that's the first time I was able to walk all the way to the top of that 'hill'."

Awww...

I was going to say something snarky in this thread 'cause some teen aged turds gave me a buzz-by while I was riding on Saturday.  But then I read this and felt all warm in a tiny corner of my cold, jaded heart.  Thanks!

That's a great story!

I'm pretty annoying on the trails ... telling little kids how great they're doing on their two wheelers ... speaking to runners and cyclists ... telling the equestrians how beautiful their horses are ... but then again, I make a concerted effort to tell the person mopping the floor at Wendy's how great the place looks ... or tell the window washer at the bank just how great the place looks ... tell the netted ladies at the grocery store how great the salad bar looks, etc. You just never know when it could make a difference.

Good for you!  Everyone likes to feel appreciated, and that someone else notices what they do.

I make an especial effort to say something like, "Cool bike!" when I see a little kid riding.

I'll bet you're a heck of a race spectator too.  I'm *that* person... you know... one who cheers for EVERY SINGLE RACER!
