This is the team thread for the Okras.

If you're an "Okra" team-mate, go ahead and share a little about yourself and your training goals - and maybe your favorite way of eating Okra!

Also, make sure you talk a lot of trash to the other teams.  Let them know we're not your ordinary variety Okra, but the kind that comes with teeth.

Have fun!

As you can see, my name is Shawn (my id was chosen in a very uncreative moment).

I've been out of action for around a year due to a health problem and a couple of injuries.  I'm about 90% now and enjoying being active again.  I've gained about 20 lbs during this time and hope to start shedding some of that.

Since I've just started training again, I won't be able to do any races this fall.  I hope to get ready for a few 5k's around the holidays.

Good to be on the "Okras" with you!

Go team!

OK...

I'm McFuzz (Mike).  I'm signed up for IMCdA June 21, 2009, so that's what I'm training for.  2008 was a hiatus from triathlons (but not training) due to a 2-week backpacking trip with the boy scouts.  I'm in the "ramp-up" phase of IM training with my August run goal being 6 hours (about 38 miles).  I expect my September goal will be 7 hours(ish) and about 45 miles, but that's not finalized.  It will depend on 1)  how August training goes and 2) whether I have a business trip around 9/20 that knocks out a (second) long-run weekend.  (I have a 3-day scout leadership course that knocks out the weekend after labor day. )

Allrihghty then.... I'm Sesh (Bill).  Tri season is over for me this year.  In fact, it's Wedding Season!!  No, not crashing.  It's MY wedding season.  Getting hitched November 15th, then post honey moon and such, training will start for the New Orleans 70.3 on April 5th.  I figured a good running challenge would help keep a decent base, since relative to the other two disciplines I'm a fairly pathetic runner.  There's also a half marathon here in Jackson, MS right after New Years that I plan on doing.  This should give me a good start before I start building up the miles again.  So, I figured I would try to run a 5k on half the days in September.  Then I just rounded up to 50, so I'll fit another 3.5 miles in there somewhere.

And no joke, my grandmother played basketball as a Delta State Fighting Okra.  Granted, the official mascot was the "Lady Statesmen" (odd and way too unoriginal).  My Grandfather also took some art classes there (when he was in his sixties) because he found out it was cheaper to pay for the class than to buy his own paint and canvasses.

And for random trivia:  The Fighting Okra won the 2000 DII National Football Championship and the 2004 DII College World Series

Hey, I'm Alison. After riding as part of a team tomorrow my triathlon season will be over, but my running season is still in full swing. I'm in the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco in October and a challenge is a little extra incentive to make sure I stay on top of training. I'm still questioning the wisdom of signing up for a marathon in a city notorious for hills and wind, so I'll definitely need all the encouragement I can get.

It'll be cool being an okra for the next month. My absolute favorite way to eat them is pickled. GO OKRAS!

OK...I've worked through some numbers and I'll sign up for 45 miles (trip or not).  That's pretty close to what my planned training would have me do, so this is my encouragement to follow the plan.

Unfortunately, I'm not up to captain the team given my commitments.

The correct answer is fried.

But, you're from way up north in Nebraska, so I'll let it slide

I would have also accepted "in gumbo."

First, I had to go to Wiki just to figure out what Okra is…now I feel a closer bond with the team already.

I’m finishing my first tri season tomorrow with my first Olympic race. I did two sprints earlier in the season and really got hooked. Thinking really hard about Timberman HIM next year.

I’ve got a half marathon in early October and maybe another in November before the deep freeze sets in. I’ll be trying to figure out my offseason training soon but I’m looking forward to getting back into the simplicity of running for a couple of months. I've also got a couple of little people in the house that kind of look like me and some lady who claims to be my wife. Guess I should spend some time at home this winter.

Can’t wait to put the smack down on the other teams!

Go Okra!

Just got some new running shoes and put the first 4 miles on them this morning! Taking this week as an active recovery from an Oly last weekend, getting geared up or some serious milage in September.

Let's get it on!

I can do it if the Fighting Okrae are cool with it.  I'll be leaving town every Friday this month, so we'll be missing a day of running each week, but they'll all get counted eventually, so we'll be ok.

I think it woud be good if we had all our miles each week.  The weekly trash talkin' in these things is pretty intense.  Is someone available on the weekends to check everyone's logs and report the time?

Thanks.

I think I'm around every weekend in September, so I would be available for doing the tallies over the weekend...

Is it pretty much just a matter of checking members' logs for weekly mileage and reporting back to our fearless challenge organizer?

It's great to have people volunteering to lead and help with this thing.

It looks like Aliclimb has has some time to keep track of our stats.

And Sesh is willing to help to.

How about co-captains.....Aliclimb our statistical captain and Sesh our motivational and, if need be, drill seargant captain?

I took the liberty to list Sesh and Aliclimb as co-captains.  Basically, because I'm leaving the office for the weekend!  Yeah!

Thanks to the both of you for your willingness to help.

Have a good weekend everyone.  I'm looking forward to a good week for the OKRA's next week.
