I am hoping to do my first tri in May this year, a sprint or possibly an Olympic. I have been running for many years but have a question regarding how my 5k race time (approx. 21mins) would compare to what I could expect to run the 5k leg of the tri in. I am just curious as to what others have experienced.

I am a slow runner, but did as well in my tri-5k (11 minute mile) as I do in my regular 5k's (10 minute mile).

Granted I've only been doing both for one year (last year was first for both)....so I'm not an expert on that, but that's my experience.

My 5k tri time and stand alone 5k time are usually within 20- 30 seconds apart- no more.

My 5k PB(22:16) was at a sprint Duathlon, to be fair tho, I just started running last year.

It depends on how good of a cyclist you are. The better and more trained on the bike the more your stand alone and triathlon 5K's will be closer to each other.
It also depends on the type of the course and weather.

Ok thanks. Seems like most peoples times (stand alone and tri) are very close, at least within seconds. I was expecting them to be minutes apart.

I may experience something different as I am a mountain biker not a road rider. I will be riding my mtn bike in the tri.

I think 1min slower is what to shoot for on a 5k and seems to hold true for alot of guys I know.

johnu - 2008-02-19 10:04 AM  I will be riding my mtn bike in the tri.

Put slicks on it for the race.  You'll be happier.

Hard to tell, really depends a lot. Im a mid 16min 5k guy and last fall I did a duathlon where the second 5k was 19 min. My first multisport event so I would say a lot depends on how much you practice running as soon as you get off your bike.

If you are fit enough you should be able to run the 5K in a sprint at your stand alone 10K pace. IOW, it will be 10-15 seconds slower per mile or around 3-5% slower than your open 5K time.

this applies for other distances but keep in mind the key here is that results will vary based on your current fitness level AND proper pacing:

Sprint - 10K pace

Oly - Half marathon pace

HIM - Marathon pace

IM - Steady state pace.

Yes, I already have them but won't use them until the race. It's too much trouble changing back and forth to the knobbies.

I was going to borrow a road bike but would rather ride a bike I am use to and train on.

You would be a very strong, fit runner to achieve your stand alone 5K pace after riding a mountain bike in a sprint tri. Not saying that it would be impossible, but I wouldn't be too disappointed if you are off your normal pace.

Did my first tri on a mountain bike. Felt really beat up on the run. Did much better once I got a road bike. But running has always been my weakness. Good luck and most importantly, have fun!

For me Tri - 22:45, 5K - 21:59 (although I went 21:43 in training today).  It really depends on how you come off the bike though.  Go too hard and find your self walking.  Go too easy and you can probably PR the 5K.  Plus for somepeople, me included, rarely run standalone 5K's so it is hard to compare.

My best 5k is 23:40.

My best 2 mile run after a 12 mile bike is 17 mins. I was considerably slower
