HI,

Did it and doing it again. This bike course is very hilly during the first 20 and last 20km.
Do a lot of hill work. Prepare for a longer time on the bike. Swim is great, run is also very tough.
Great course and very well organized, beautiful area.

Is this your 1st half?

Yes it will be my first half. Good thing I have a bit less than a year to train.
I am going to start out the season with an early spring Marathon and try to hit as many local sprints and Oly's as I can.
I know the area around Huntsville hopefully I'll get a couple of chances to train there during the summer.

Nice, that coming from a guy who hasn't updated his blog since last April 18 and I haven't seen at Master's?
We should definitly carpool to London area for some training. I saw your name on the entry roll.

I haven't been to Master's for a while, I've been hitting the Pee-pee pool at water world. Just works out good for me. I go right before work and I can go right after work plus they have Adult lap swimming 7 days a week 6:30-9:00 week days and 7:30-9:00 week-ends, plus some afternoon stuff.

The 401 on ramp to Windsor has been closed in Belle River so it is kind of a hassle, plus I show up 6:30 and swim until 7:30 then go to work which is 2mins down the road, and if I want to get an early morning run/bike in I can hit the river front trail easy before swimming.

Mike and I were hitting stop 26 a couple times a week until early October so if you are interested I'll let you know when we head out in the spring. It is kind of nice you head out against the current and then head back in with it.

There are a few people around here doing the race so we will all have to hook up and find some hills to train on!

I'm also an Essex county flat-lander doing Muskoka next year, so I would like to join you guys for some hill training in the spring. I did Muskoka this year, and was not properly prepared for the hills. My bike split at Muskoka was nearly an hour longer than my bike split at Steelhead, so I have some work to do. Other than hill training on the bike and run my advice for Muskoka is book accomodations right away, and be prepared for some cool and wet conditions.

We will keep in touch just pm me and I'll keep you informed of our rides/swims/runs!
Thanks for the advice, I have already set lodging. It feels pretty good to have the accomodations and everything set up a year in advance.

Did it last year and will do it again. It's a challenging course. The bike course has short and somewhat steep hills and there are lots of them at the beginning and end and the run course just winds around and around seeming like it will never end. Overall, I loved the event. Good advice on being ready for cool and likely wet conditions.

Next year will be hot and dry I"m sure - it can't rain anymore than it did in 08. Ditto on the hills - really challenging and the run screws with your head a bit in that it's quite windy, esp the last 5 km.

Definately book accomodation now.

I watched the 2008 70.3 today on TSN...man I am in for a world of hurt. Anyone in Essex County knows we have no hills. Even the pro's looked as if they were struggling in Huntsville

If you want a good warm up race for this... try the HSBC Bracebridge Half Ironman. You get a taste of what the hills are like on the bike, but the run is nice and flat. It may not have the excitement and crowds that you will get at Muskoka, but it's a good warm up race for Muskoka. I thought the town of Bracebridge did an AWESOME job supporting this race... there was always a friendly face at the aid stations and you were made to feel like you were awesome even if you were slow!

For a first time event it was great, and it will only get better with time, fact is I think they've made it a weekend affair this year. They've added a tri-a-tri and sprint on the Saturday before.

So if you want some training in the hills, I'd recommend this race.

I agree, a nice small race. The HSBC group always has very home -y sort of events. It's less corporate than Ironman - did both Bracebridge and Muskoka last year (and will this year on the way to Arizona).

Was a very tough upcurrent swim last year but they promised to tone that down this year.
