Is anyone a member of a Master swimming club? How is it? I don't even know enough to ask an intelligent question, so any information would be nice to have.

Choose a club, find out the practice times. http://www.msabc.ca/clubs.html

You'll have to pay a fee to be on a masters team, which is usually included in the club fee. However, you can register independently. Swim meets require you be registered, and masters BC requires that all swimmers part of a masters club pay the fee.

For your workouts, based on your level, you'll be put in a lane. In that lane, you will be ordered from fastest to slowest during the workout.

I do not know your location but if it is in Surrey there are performance training sessions at the South Surrey Swimming pool on Tuesday and Thursday nights. I swim there and the instructor is very knowledgeable. I did the Penticton Ironman many years ago and want to do another so that is my purpose. There is also a tri club starting up here with some veterans as the core group. If that interests you email me at [email protected] for more details.

I swim with the Hyack "Tri-fit" group at the Coquitlam City Center Aquatic Complex.  They also have Masters programs and run out of both CCAC and Canada Games pool in New West.  The trifit group is more focused on freestyle than Masters which works in all four competitive styles.  The Tuesday/Thursday group only has 6 people and we get two reserved lanes so it's pretty nice.

Also, I believe the first week is free so you can show up and try it out...

What time does it start? Any idea? I usually show up at around 7 am for the 50m lengths but it would be good to get some structured workouts.

.....before any smarties show up, YEAH! I know I could look it up, but I'm a bit on the lazy side and I like getting people to do things for me. Machines and other people, two of my favorite things!

So I am just getting into this Tri business and at some point will need some swimming coaching (I am a descent swimmer, but I imagine my stroke leaves much to be desired!)... When I hear Master's I think older people, are these groups open to all ages?

I believe you need to be at least 55 years old and you have to have competed in either a Provincial or World swim championship. You also have to placed in the top 5 of said tournies. I believe

No idea, just kidding about all the above stuff. Others I've talked to have had the same "intimidation" factor. There is usually a pretty good mix of beginners to very experienced. There isn't any requirements or prerequisites to join, I would call up the pool that you are looking at going to and ask about the program and what it is geared to; triathlon or swimming and maybe even ask what kind of mix of swimmers are usually there just to see if it is a good fit for you. I'd bet you'll learn a lot, I did the Master at Canada Games Pool and learned tons from both the coach and the people in the lanes, most everyone there will be eager to help out.

Anyone know of a cheaper pool around the New West area? Canada games, bonsor and CG brown are all like $5 a session... is that pretty much standard? Seems like a lot!

If you go often, the passes are a good deal.

Yea I probably won't be going enough for the monthly pass to be a good deal, as I already have a gym membership. The multi pass deal works out to 4.** each time which is prob what I'll have to do. The burnaby pools have a $1 swim but they are on bad times (ie, saturday night!)
