Subject: Lower Mainland tris

Hello everyone!

What is your favorite tri that you have done in the lower mainland?

I am having a hard time picking out some sprint tris for this coming season. I am in the lower mainland and don't want to travel too far from home. This will be my first season so I would like a beginner friendly event.

So far, I have picked out Cultus Lake Olympic tri as my A race in September. I would like a couple sprints along the way though. I was eying a sprint in the North Shore in May. The race that I really wanted to do was the Iron Mountain tri (Maple Ridge) in June but they have posted nothing about there being a race this year. Also, the Langley tri said they were not doing one this year.

Any good beginner tris out there that I am not thinking of?

I assume you're talking about Walnut Grove not happening, but the City of Langley will be having their sprint event again this year at the end of June, they just haven't posted any info yet. Its a great beginner event - really laid back, but well organised with good traffic control.

I haven't done it myself, and can't make it again this year, but I've heard good things about the Delta event.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks!

I will look into the Langley event. I had only heard of the Walnut Grover sprint.

I was going to do the Delta tri but it is sold out already. Grr!!

I haven't tried it yet but I hear there is a Stanley Park event September3rd-ish.  They offer sprint and Oly distances.  I was going to give it a try but I've got two Kelowna events on either side of it so I'm not sure I could handle it.

I'm registered for delta, and bummed about walnut grove.

I regularly do stanley park as well, but that's not until september and very close to cultus lake (which i dont attend because of the whistler gran fondo)

I would recommend the other vancouver triathlon (subaru). http://triseries.ca/vancouver/ .  I'll be doing the olympic this year but they have a sprint as well.  This will be my third year there and it's the first year that they've added an olympic distance

I have looked at the Vancouver Subaru triathlon and I am not sure why but the thought of swimming in the ocean scares the crap out of me, especially for my first triathlon with an OWS.

Would you say that this race would be good for a beginner? Is the ocean as scary as I am making it out in my head?

For beginners, delta, UBC and walnut grove are the best --  an OWS environment is quite different yes, and only you could say for sure if that's something you'd want to do

However, with that in mind, if you went into the race with the mindset that that you want to start the swim at the very back (and dont care if you're late getting out of the water), then i would totally recommend it - the experience of the ocean swim is extremely valuable.

good luck!

To anyone out there,

I travel to the Vancouver aera (Surrey) and I'm looking for a pool to do laps and a place I can run outdoors.

I'm flexible and can stay by the airport or in Surrey.

Any suggestions,

Much appreciated,

Cheers

I don't know the area around the airport but I do know that Surrey has many pools. Do you know what area you will be in?

Here is a link to the different pools in Surrey:

Just look at the indoor pools, I believe all the outdoor pools are closed right now.

If you need further help just let me know.

Surrey covers a large area. Whereabouts in Surrey will you be, and will you have your own transportation?

Surrey Sport and Leisure (16500-ish - Fraser Highway) is a nice pool, and you could run nearby. As mentioned, the Tong Louie Y is good. North Surrey Rec Centre pool is ok... many would suggest avoiding that area, though...  Green Timbers Forest Park (100 ave and 148 st) has some nice packed-gravel trails, no traffic.

You would be best off swimming laps at the Surrey Sport and Leisure. It will take you about a 15 minute drive each way.

X2.

If you want a track to run on, there is one at Holy Cross High School, around 96th and 160th??. Or Bear Creek Park, 88th and 140-ish... Or, as I suggested earlier, Green Timbers.

Exercisegirl

Have you had a look at this race -  http://www.englishbaytriclub.org/lees-trail-triathlon/

... is a detailed race report here on BT from blueeyedbikergirl

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=210664

Has anyone else done this event? Any comments good or bad?

I will second the suggestion for the Langley City event. I did it last year as my first (and only so far) event. It was very well-run, and NO chance of getting lost / off-course as it was very well-marked with many volunteers and route markings.

On a side note, I have gotten an email from the RD for the Ironmountain tri telling me the event has been cancelled... He said the website will soon be updated....
