Hi All

I registered for the Busso Half last night and the reality of attempting such a long distance is starting to sink in today! I've been a regular at the sprint level, finished my first olympic distance in May and now getting pumped to train for a "big" one!

It should be a fun seven months! Any tips for a half ironman newbie??

Get a plan!  Are you a member of a club?  Stadium Tri Club does a training course specifically for the Busso half, all the thinking and planning is done for you, you just have to turn up and do the training.  I'm sure the other clubs do similar things.  Well done on taking the plunge, everybody I know who's done the event raves about how fantastic it is.

It depends what your aims are. Do you just want to complete it? Do you want to go sub 5 hours? What kind of bike are you riding? You don't need a $5000 bike, but it would be good to at the very least have aero bars, an aero helmet and a bike fit. Also you need to run, lots! Plus bricks i.e riding long, then running off the bike. Also depends on how many hours of training you can put in. You can do a HIM without any training, but you probably won't record a decent time.

Hey

It's funny (kind of) that this message has popped back up! I signed up last year and two weeks later I started having trouble with my knee. I was pretty positive that it would get better but in the end it didn't and I ended up not starting the race (my first DNS ever!). A month after I should have raced, I was having surgery instead. 6 months later and I'm still trying to get back to running and cycling!

My friend who I convinced to sign up with me (having never done a triathlon) went on to kick butt at that race and then just finished the Busso Ironman. So something good came out of it!

I just signed up for the Busso Jetty swim being a crap swimmer. Any tips on that one??

Have you got a decent wetsuit? As far as training goes, make sure you do shorter distances in the pool, sprints, 100s etc Don't just jump in the pool and plod up & down. Race day, let the pack get ahead, start slow, find some open space with noone too close and get into a comfortable pace. Make sure you can see a couple of swimmers in front and follow their line - saves you having to constantly water polo swim to see where you're going & where the buoys are.

Wow what a race. Perfect weather and as always a fantastic atmosphere.
Best conditions I've seen in a long time, this was my first 70.3 (have done a few team efforts in the past).
Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did, with the lack of morning wind the bike course was extremely fast this year

Yeah it was great. Couldn't believe how clear the water was. I was hoping for 5.15 and got 5.14, so pretty stoked How did you go?

Well done.

Being realistic I was targeting 5:30.00. I finished in 4:57.18 which was huge deal for me as I've had a long jouney back since being hit by a car in 2012 and suffering two compound fractures to a leg, the half ironman and full have always been goals of mine prior to the accident and now they are even more important because they have become my rehab focus. My swim and ride are fast, just got a lot of work to do on the run before the next 70.3

Did you do the wings for life run ? (I would have liked to but I could barely walk on Sunday)

I hear mandurah 70.3 course is good, I'm feeling very tempted.

I came down to busso for the day just to watch, only ever done sprint and enticer tris, it got me that pumped watching I'm going to register for Mandurah 70.3, and I'm shitting myself haha. I'll be stoked to finish it but ideally I would love to crack 6 hours.

Ha ha no I was pretty hungover!

Mandurah is OK, last time it was 38 degrees, so pretty hideous. The spectators were complaining about the heat. Swim is fast as it's in the canals with a positive current, ride is OK, but hard if windy and run has one hill in it. Busso is far better and much quicker, but give Mandurah a shot. And well done, 4.57 is awesome. I've got to work on my run too. Swim & bike were quick, run was as slow as. I can run a 42min 10km, so to run 2hours for the 21.1 is a bit crap!

I did Mandurah as part of a team last year. It was ok but very very hot. It didn't bother me because I did the swim but our bike rider suffered a fair bit in the heat and wind and his 3 punctures didn't help either.

3 punctures?? How did he manage that!

Yeah I'm hoping it won't be as hot this year.
