Subject: SS commuter recommendations?

I'm looking at getting a second bike that I can use for commuting, running errands, and possibly tooling around on the very tame rail trails nearby.  So I'd probably want at least 30 mm tires for gravel and cruddy roads.  Pretty flat area, a fair amount of traffic at times (NYC metro area).  Disc brakes would be a plus for bad weather, but not essential.  Lighter weight is better, at least under 28 lbs, preferably under 26. 

So, the current list is: Trek Soho S, Redline 925 (perty!), Mongoose Sabrosa, Raleigh One Way (haven't seen a price, may be too $$$), Bianchi San Jose, or some sort of IRO custom build.

Anyone know anything about these bikes?  Suggestions on which might be better/worse?

Yeah, the Mongoose does look heavy, I did see somewhere that the 3x9 was 27-something pounds, so it may not be too bad.  Trek also looks pretty heavy, but nobody seems too keen on listing weights on their websites.

And I agree, the Raleigh is really old-school looking - not nuts about it.

I bought my brother a cyclcross bike from Ibex 2 years ago and he loves it.  They also have another bike in their lineup that would work.  Not sure of your budget, but checkout this bike here, 700x28 tires, 23.5 lbs (wo pedals), disk brakes and 105 rear derailuer for $750 (soldout right now).

I like the Trek, the Redline and the Bianchi.  The Mongoose looks heavy...the Raleigh is too retro.

At the beginning of the summer I got a Specialized Langster - Seattle edition (it was what was available in my size) but I swapped for drop bars.

Put clipless pedals on and I love it.

Did you leave the fenders on?

 

yes and I get compliments and comments all the time!

if I ever decide to go to the track I will have to take them off as well as the brakes....but not this season....

Go ride in a cycling skirt and you might be able to pull off 22. Those things are REALLY cute. I saw some in Davis on Saturday at one of the LBSes.

I've put a couple of thousand miles on a Bianchi San Jose commuting to work year-round in Minnesota. It's a great bike other than the crappy semi-knobby stock tires. I put on some Panracer T-Serve messenger tires (28's), fenders, and lights and have been quite pleased.

The San Jose is very comfortable to ride, and I have done some 50+ mile rides on the rail-bed trails while training for IMOO this year on it. If I buy a road bike, it will have a VERY similar frame to the San Jose.
