Subject: Breathing while swimming

Hello everyone.  Long-time lurker and new to triathlon training.  I bit the bullet and signed up for Columbia Tri next may, and am attempting to get ready for a sprint tri near my house at the end of september.  Currently working on swim endurance as my primary focus as i can run and bike fairly well (we'll see how well after i swim though).  I only need to swim 500 meters in a pool, so i'm doing a modified 0to1650 plan (cutting it in half for now).

 

My biggest question is on breathing while swimming.  I get a pretty good body turn, head just turning and not picking my head up, but i still seem to get water in my mouth from streaming down my face.   Not every time, but often enough that i don't get a breath on a stroke and it throws my rhythm off.  Is this something that I will eventually work out of or is there a way to avoid water in my mouth.

water ALWAYS gets into my mouth, and gets out when I exhale.  Sometimes I swallow the water.  Doesn't bother me.

When I first started swimming I had the same problem. Your breathing will get better after a while. I still swallow water every once in a while but nothing like when I first started. I do my first tri in two weeks, in a lake. I've been told that your rythm will get thrown off anyways form other swimmers splashing and sometimes kicking.

When I started swimming (not too long ago), I took on so much water that they had to refill the pool when I was done training.  It gets better.

Last weekend I swam in a choppy lake and was able to avoid taking on too much water even in the chop.  It comes.   Just keep swimming and keep working on the body roll, etc...  I have found side-kicking drills and body roll drills to be especially helpful for cleaning up my breathing, among other things.

I prefer breathing while swimming too  

Your breathing should be a long, steady, exhale followed by a quick, controlled, inhale.  If you have water draining into your mouth, you may be over-rotating (so you've turned your mouth into a rain gauge).  As you get faster, you'll create a trough right next to your head and won't need to rotate so far.  Until then, even if you get water in your mouth, push it out during your exhale.  It's actually good practice for those times when you really catch a wave.

I had a similar problem and figured out that the times that it happened where when I didnt complete my stroke and brought my arm out too early.  Especially getting back into swimming, I was more focused on speed, or getting through my time rather than technique.  I worked on completing my stroke and my breathing has gotten much better and I dont get as much water in my mouth, at least no enough to make me gag like before.   I have also found that I am going faster, by going slower.  I dont tire as quickly and can get into a good rhythm.

The breathing will get easier as you train more...at least that's what I found. I found that turning too much will fill your mouth with water as well (I think Mcfuzz mentioned that) just find a rhythm and work with it...

In open water conditions I will exagerate my head roll to get to clear air, especially in choppy conditions.  But I am not the best swimmer out there, so not sure if that is the best approach.  It does work for me though and I will often do it in the pool for practice.

breathing while swimming ... is good. I just had to add that. Find somebody - lifeguard, fellow triathlete - to watch you while swimming. They can usually let you know if you're over or under rotating or trying to hard and getting water in your mouth. If that's not possible, when you turn your head, tilt it just enough so your mouth comes just out of the water. Try to find a horizontal point - lane line, wall etc. - to stare at to make sure you're turning your head horizontally and not pulling it up during the turn.

For starters, I've been swimming all my life, and competitively since I was 3 and believe me I still swallow more water than anyone ever should while swimming. But on a different note I have just another pointer... sometimes people tend to rush their stroke and their breathing too much. Try to remember that swimming is about efficiency. If you rush your breathing too much you could not be allowing yourself enough time to take a decent breath. You find that a lot with newer swimmers because they're so focused on going fast rather than swimming efficiently. If you begin to slow your stroke down and really focus on your reach through the water (extending your arm and rolling your shoulder) I think you will find you have more time to breath and less water to drink.

 That said... the more people in the pool as you swim... the more wake there is and the more water you drink.

x2 on everything that has been said so far. Here's a trick that works for me: at the end of your long, controlled exhale, exhale quickly through your nose and mouth (this should be just as your mouth is coming out of the water, before you've completed your roll). This does two things for me- it empties my lungs of air, allowing for a deep, full inhale, and it seems to get rid of some of the residual water around my mouth and nostrils.

This might sound wierd but I have a big mop of unruly hair by nature and I found that keeping it short esp in front, I take on a lot less water. It was dripping off the mop in front and streaming down my face similar to what you describe when breathing. I dont swim with a cap unless I have to.

I still seem to take one big gulp of lake water straight to the gullet in every race. It hasn't gotten me sick yet and I have come to accept it as "getting in tune with the course"
