I did Giant Acorn last year as my first tri----can't recommend it enough!!!  It's a great time/end to the season (for most).  A 10am start is nice and last year the weather was great.  It's a great location and course.  You can't go wrong with Giant Acorn (yes I'm doing it again this year!).

If you want a challenge, do Sandman, it is a straight 1000m ocean swim. You might get glassy and flat conditions or a washing mashine. Its on the oceanfront and there is plenty to do afterwards.

Or... Do both!

hmmmm... swimming is my strength, but I hate wet suits! I don't know if I could handle water in the 60's.
What to do, what to do!

The part of the lake where the Giant Acorn is, is the heated part of the lake.  You certainly won't need a wetsuit.  And with the 10 AM start, you don't need to get up at the crack of stoopid.    There are a bunch of us from the Nova area doing this, so far 8 or 9, I think.

I will be doing Giant Acorn. I did the Rumpass in Bumpass which is in the same spot. Great location, well run, and nice course.

Since it was my first tri last year I didn't have a wetsuit and didn't want to rent one for a sprint so I did it without a wetsuit---I didn't think it was bad at all so if you don't want to wear a wetsuit Giant Acorn is a good choice...

I'm registered for Sandman, but haven't been to or done either before.

Looking forward to the ocean swim though.

The water will NOT be in the 60s. No suit needed.

Just when I thought I had decided! Maybe if I get some aero bars I can hammer out enough time on the flat bike course to make up for my "run" ...

The lake at Giant Acorn will be in the mid-70s. No need for a wetsuit. If they stick to the same course from the past 2 years, it's a rolling bike and a flat run. However, they changed the run course for the Rumpass in Bumpass races early in the spring, which were new races and take place in the same location as Giant Acorn. That run course was rolling as well, and not shaded for the most part. BUT a lot of people complained about the new run course, so maybe they will leave it alone for Giant Acorn.

Well, I am doing the Sandman.  I planned to make it my end of season as it is flat and SHOULD be my best times of the year (esp considering I will have done an oly and a half marry in the month leading up to it).  This being said, I have some friends that are all doing the Giant Acorn oly and are trying to talk me into it.  I dunno if I can keep my head about me for another few weeks.  I am so looking forward to getting some normalcy back to my life before I start my off-season training.

If I do decide to go, I need to be assured that there is going to be a big NoVa meet and drink to celebrate.

I wish I was doing the Oly's my DH keeps saying I should, but I really haven't made it to the run distance yet. This is my first season and I plan on really working on my run in this winter, and try some olys next year!

Looks like I am going to do BOTH the Giant Acorn and Sandman Tri ;0)

I'll see you guys for the Giant Acorn Sprint.  Not my last race of the season, but excited to do the course again and measure my progress since Rumpass in Bumpass.
