Last night, I let my teenage son borrow my car. This morning, I got into it and it REEKS of cigarette smoke! (the issue about WHO and WHY regarding smoking in my car was a whole other *loud* discussion with my son today) In the meantime, my car STINKS! I drove around (in 20-degree weather) with the windows down and it didn't help. I have leather seats and worry that they may have soaked in the smoke and I'll never get rid of it. Do any of you know of tricks to get rid of the nasty smoke smell in my car? It smells like a bowling alley. Or a nasty taxi cab. Ick!

I was going to suggest you could run over a skunk, but I suppose there's not too many of them in Ohio at this time of year!

Sorry Michele...I feel for ya.  I hate the smoke smell too.  I can remember years when our kids got Christmas presents from my inlaws (both heavy smokers) and you'd swear there was a carton of butts in the package...even before you opened it!  Often times, we simply had to throw the gift away, especially if it was clothing.

get a big cheesecloth filter bag from an aquarium supply store and fill it with fresh ground coffee.  Activated charcoal will also do the same thing, but lacks that nice coffee smell.  Regardless, it will absorb the smell.  Just make sure it gets good air circulation.   You can also put a bowl of vinegar in the car when you come home for the night.  Just remember to take it out

Spray can of ozone. Sold in some auto parts stores, also sold as "new car smell". Actually destroys the odor. Ozone will literally take the stink off sh#$. We use a much stronger version of it at various superfund sites to oxidize things you wouldn't want to think about. Cig smoke is no problem.

I smoke cigars on road trips. Occasional smoke will dissipate rather quickly. Try leaving the sunroof open and windows rolled down when the car is in the garage.

It's probably in your ac/heating system - you need to turn the air from "circulate" to "outside air" and run it that way for a bit to clean out the system the heater will still work, but will just not heat as quickly/efficiently.  Your car should have a button for this with either straight or diagonal icons, usually arrows, signifying outside or an icon with an arrow in an oval pattern, indicating recycled air.

When you confront him with it, do it on the sly:

So what did you do?

Where did you go?

Who was with you?

Get these answers from him BEFORE you ask him about the smokeing in the car and if HE'S the one who was smoking so that he cannot improvise and tell you it was his friend "timmy." ...and if it was "timmy", tell your son you are going to call "timmy's mom" and let her know "timmy" is smoking.

"...and junior, if "timmy" tells HIS mom it was YOU who was smoking..., well, we're going behind the woodshed...."

Spill a little beer and/or bong water in the carpeting and that should take care of the cigarrette smoke smell.

Guess that's probably not the answer you're looking for.
