This is kind of Tri related kind of not, so I figured COJ maybe a decent fit.

I will be leaving Alaska in May 2013. I am planning to drive to my next job and looking for some sights to see/rides to do/trails to run. I am looking at Seattle to Yellowstone. Then down to Vegas, then on to Nashville. As it gets closer I may look for a race or 2 along the way, but I want to plan some great s/b/r workouts in the trip. I will have all of my Tri gear with me plus some extras (mtb, road bike, climbing gear, wetsuit, etc). Any suggestions welcome. Even if it adds a little drive time I am open to additional city stops.

Fit in a side trip to Moab, UT on your journey south from Yellowstone.  See Arches and Canyonlands.  You can probably use the: road bike, MTB, and climbing gear.

Grand Canyon has a great mountain bike trail on the North Rim.  You could ride from the Grand Canyon to Meteor Crater.

Colorado, Garden of the Gods is an awesome sight and I think there are a few hills in that state that people like to climb.

Amarillo, Go to the Big Texan and try to eat the 72 oz steak Protein load.

Yeah, he could see it from the edge of the state since your state is Flatter than a Pancake.

I would rather eat a 72 oz steak than drive through Kansas...

Hahaha I love this:

Conclusion
Simply put, our results show that Kansas is considerably flatter than a pancake.

Before gorging on 72oz of homegrown American beef at the Big Texan in Amarillo, stop by Palo Dura Canyon (in Canyon TX). Its the second largest Canyon in the US, has quite a few trails to run or bike, rocks are too soft to do much more than some light bouldering. But, the climbing in The Garden of the Gods (Colorado Springs) is excellent, lots of routes and lots of people usually out there to help.

Look kids! The St. Louis arch. The gateway to the west. There's a elevator which goes the whole way to the top.

Can we go up in it?

No.

If your first leg is Seattle-Yellowstone an easy stop off would be Couer d'Alene (home of IM CDA-obviously). I know the lake is mostly busy with boats and seaplanes on non-race days but you could probably get in a good bike/run along the IM course (or shorten it).

If you're into the outdoors I would stop by Glacier NP before hitting Yellowstone, though at your timeframe it still probably will be snow covered (making snowshoes a necessity if wanting to hike).

If you're really interested in the cheesy stuff check out http://www.roadsideamerica.com/  They usually hold a Sprint Tri here (near Boulder) in the later part of May, but they haven't posted the 2013 schedule. You can check here: http://www.withoutlimits.co/  Colorado may be too far out of the way for your trip though.

I just drove through this today in Oklahoma - it's a Prairie Preserve that houses 2,700 bison, which roam free. So you can get right up close, they cross the roads, no fences, etc.

Right now they are herding all of them for medical stuff and micro-chipping, but they said April/May is the best time as the calves are born and they are very active.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I am still planning the trip. It will actually start in Fairbanks, AK and end at Ft Campbell, KY. I figure if someone is paying for me to move I might as well as enjoy the scenery. Yellowstone, Vegas, the Grand Canyon are definitely on my list. As I get closer I may even try to hit a tri as I travel. I am looking forward to seeing the country.

That seems cool!
