Subject: Do I have the right to be mad?
I do all my swims at the school's pool. Generally I am the only person there, but latley I've talked a group of my friends to join me, so now it's regular group of 4 people. Anyway, the life gaurds are volunteers and you can tell they don't want to be there.

Anyone that reads my blogs will know where I'm going....

Our pool is a 25 yard pool with 5 lanes. They have two lanes, a lane marker, then three lanes, dividing the pool into areas for those wanting to do laps and the larger area for those who just want to screw around.

Today the four of us get there and start swimming. Chris and I hop in the lap lanes and start swimming while Kelly and Sarah start in the other side. Five minutes later, 20 people come pouring out of the locker rooms and jump in the large section. Appearently the track team decided to do pool running today. I was a bit ticked, but still okay. They could have reserved the pool for themselves, as would be practicle when taking up the ENTIRE pool. So now five of us are sharing 2 lanes, which isn't optimal but isn't bad. Especially since I'm just doing 50 yrd intervals for now. So I get through my 50 yard intervals and start on my 100 yrd sets when this huge guy cannonballs into the pool, almost landing on top of Kelly. She makes a mini-fuss about it and all he does is say, "oh...sorry" then starts laughing as his five other friends do the same thing. I keep swimming and on my way back notice someone passing exceedingly close to me on the left (where the lane marker is). I think I'm just close to the marker and it's somebody over there. I get to the end of the lap and turn to look, and guess what. It was one of those idiots swimming to the shallow end between me and the lane marker..... Make sense to you?

I'm starting to get a little pissed at this point, so I take off again. I reach the other end of the pool and run into a kid. I stop, look at him and say "excuse me, I'm trying to swim laps here." He just looks at me and says "so what, I'm playing foot ball, watch where you're going." So I turn around and swim back (FYI that was my fastest 25 yrd split). I decide to try one more 100 yrd set and both laps I end up dodging people that just don't care. On the last leg I even get pegged with the football!

Now the thing is, the pool rules are posted in at least 2 places and in LARGE RED LETTERS it is written: NO BALLS OR HORSEPLAY ALLOWED IN THE POOL. The entire time I am there, the life guard AND two track coaches are just sitting there watching this going on and laughing about it. After getting pegged with the foot ball, I just got out, grabbed my towel and left, visibly pissed. As I walked past the life guard, I heard him comment to the track coach, "what's his problem."

What the hell is wrong with people???

I woulda joined the football game and drilled the little sucker right in the freakin' coconut with the ball.  "Hey I'm just playing football, watch what yer doin!"

Option #2 is to swim over and de-pants him and take his shorts with you.

Good ones max. I would have grabbed the football and chucked it far far way. Too bad it wasn't a beach ball you could've popped.

On second thought, you should have pee'd in the pool as you left to have the last laugh.

Sure you have a right to be mad... but as you said most of the time you have the pool to yourself..... also I would have said something to the track coaches or the lifeguard. Even if they don't want to be there they may be willing to do their job!!

Or done the Baby Ruth bar routine from Caddyshack.

Well I e-mailed the director who manages the entire center over there basicly telling him that the life guards lack of supervision was rediculous. This actually wasn't the first time questionable stuff has happened. There have been a few instances of people grossly disobeying the rules and a few times where the life guard would disappear for five or ten minutes leaving me completely alone in the pool. I never said anything, as it didn't directly affect me at the time. Well now he knows.

I just got a reply from him saying that he's going to look into it have a chat with the kife guards

I ask myself that question almost daily. Hopefully the director of pool will really look into it. The director of our acquatics center is a bad a$$. She takes no crap from the life guards, when members complain she takes action, and even though she can be crass and obnoxious, we have a great acquatics center! Hopefully you'll have similar luck! Ticked me off just reading about the incident!

I like the babe ruth in the pool suggestion....

That sounds smart--things like that can really tick me off.

I do recommend adding the Baby Ruth bit to the responsible member bit, though--instant gratification.

The summer before last the Y put a huge water basketball goal diagonally across from where I stand to teach water aerobics.  At first the ball would splash near me or hit me and I'd just get mad and throw it back.  Eventually I figured out that if I threw the bball out of the pool, to the edge of the grass it would take them a lot longer to get it back.  They figured out quickly to not let me get my hands on that ball.  Ummmm....summer memories.

I vote for that one... grab the ball, walk to the E-exit and punt it out into the warm South Dakota February night...

You should have talked to the lifeguard and reminded him of the rules.  If he ignored you, then you should have went to the school authorities to register a complaint.  And, yes, you had a right to be pissed off!  I know that I would have been but I would not have been so kind to the little monsters!

I would have been nice the first time with a warning.  But the second time..........sixteen years experience of playing water polo would not have gone wasted.

Don't get in my way.

You do have the right to get angry.   I hope you get some sort of noticable reaction from the management.
