As for going crazy... we do get kinda addicted to the endorphins.
During your recovery, how 'bout trying something less jarring than running - riding on a trainer or stationary bike, or using the eliptical machine at a gym? Can you free lift & do squats? I'm guessing pushups no... if you do large-muscle-groups strength work in a CIRCUIT instead of in squats, with no rest between sets, you will maintain a nice high heartrate. In fact 20 minutes of that might do it. If you have no access to a gym or freeweights, you could try squats (remember, no rest), then chair dips, then pushups if you can, then whatever ab exercise you might be able to do without pain, then back to the beginning.
