well I haven't signed up for a race yet - but I shall shortly. been out today and got myelf properly fitted for shoes. I would have gone for any old pair if it hadn't been for this site!! So I need xxxxxx wide (umm sounds like the rest of me :-) ) So nearly $100 later I had beeter damn well commit!! Aimning for my first even ever at the end of August (thanks for the link trimom - I'll do the one you send me the info for) and am excited already.
My initial target was September but I'm not a complete couch so I'm mobving it up a month. First swim tomorrow as well (not first ever but you know what I mean!).

Now all I need is a bike - any advice - cheap is good!!!! (Ps -I'm only doing a sprint to start so I don;t need a monster do everything for me bike - or maybe I do! :D

ummmm I sound excited I think. I think the bug has bitten me!

hey.....

I already posted this on your log, but I'll do it again because I crack myself up!

A hundred bucks? You are just getting warmed up! consider that an appetizer

I'll have to look at the races on that link as well. Which one were you thinking of doing? I go to Sunapee to ski so I can go to NH to tri too.

I think I'll go for the timberman in August - should be in enough shape then to manage it. I can easily get up there and do the bike ride and run before to try it out. I can also then go along to an earlier one to watch how it goes - especially transition and the equipement I'll need!

trying to think of everything now is daunting!!! just a bit at a time - swin and goggles tomorrow I think - see how that goes.

I may shoot for the Timberman Half IM next year. I want to do an Oly first. I jumped at a 1/2 IM a few years ago and DNF'd. Horrible day, not fully prepared, but I need revenge on the distance.

Watching a race is a great idea. You also need to practice transitions, and practice laying out your transition area.

ellen - no probs for ME. I was going to get the wife another car but she can just stay witht he old one and I'll spend the downpayment :-)

sounds fair to me.

Oh yeah - I guess I'll buy a rack to put the bike on her car so she can drive me about.

she gets a bike holder - how much fairer can it be????

yep, that's the deal I had to make with my husband as well. As a matter of fact, he now has a company car and that's it. I have a new car to haul all my tri toys around in.

good thing you remembered the bike rack! I forgot to add that.

I need to get a trailer hitch for my bike rack. When we got rid of my husband's van I lost my trailer hitch. I really llike the bike rack for the hitch and would rather buy a new hitch than a new rack. Thanks for reminding me.

Congrats, Irongirl! Signing up, and PAYING YOUR MONEY, is a big step. It's a commitment. I know lots of people who start training for races, but never sign up, and eventually drop out for this or that reason. But take that step of registering, and paying, and it definitely feels like a much more solid commitment.

I don't know the exact statistics, but I read that something like 90% of people who make it to the start line of a race will eventually finish that type of race. (Not necessarily THAT particular race, but a comparable race. ie, if you start a marathon, you will likely finish some marathon some day. same for IM and half-IM).

BUT, only 25% of people who start training ever make it to the starting line.

And actually signing up for an event, as opposed to just talking about signing up, is a big step towards being in that 25% And, of course, here's where my stats are sketchy - I think it was 75% or so of those who registered that made it to the starting line.

In other words, it's easy to talk about doing a half-IM, but once you actually put your money where your mouth is, you're much more likely to reach your goal. Even your post says it - "It's official". You can do it, and you will do it.

Done it.

I have no bike, can’t swim more than 50 yards without a rest and my running shoes haven’t been out of the house yet.

But I have signed up for and paid for a race in August.
Better get up early tomorrow and get to the gym!

Its official.
I AM doing to do 1 if not 2 sprints this year.

*closes eyes and stumbles towards his goal*

oh man, way to go!!! I am sooo psyched for you!! Now that you have a goal race you may find your training a bit easier to reckon with.

Congrats again!!
