Aikidoman - 2009-06-18 12:22 PM I have had a long time passion for training/physiology/coaching and the recent economy has given me more time and perhaps the incentive to try something new.
You have to take what life offers, and work it to your advantage, no?
That being said, I was thinking I could take this oportunity to go back to school again. UNLV has programs in Athletic Training and Kinesiological Sciences with the oportunity to get a masters in Kinesiology or Sports Physiology.
If I was looking into a field to perhaps train/coach/study human performance, maybe do physical therapy, what is the suggested route or field to get into?
Suggestions/thoughts?
If you are thinking of physical therapy, that's a masters or doctorate course, IIRC.
Athletic training is generally the guys on the sidelines bringing water, doing the tape jobs, taking care of injuries in the locker room, etc. The higher up in the food chain you go, the more experience you need.
I took a quick peek, and the two masters programs UNLV offers are in two different paths. The Exercise physiology one is more for the clinical side, more hospital testing
(treadmill stress tests, etc
), more research oriented. If you go this route, you might as well go whole hog and get the doctorate. A few colleges
(ASU being one of them, damitall
) are phasing out the Masters in Kines level entirely. The Kines masters that UNLV has would be more for the coaching, working with the public, training, etc.
That's one of the regrets that I have, that I didn't go further with my kinesiology stuff. If I had, I might have been coaching for years instead of sitting in front of a computer all day. :-/
