Subject: Baselines for improvement on Run / Bike / Swim

Coming from a running background, I've noticed that to improve my times I have to run at least 20 miles per week.  I know everyones different, but I'm pretty sure this is close to a mean average (maybe even on the low end).   Although I've cycled for a few years, I just kinda go and don't have it down to a science, and still clueless with the numbers I need to do on my swim.

I have two questions regarding this;

Why is it that when I look at others peoples logs most do less than 20 mpw?
What is the average persons baseline improvement numbers for the bike and swim?

Everything is relative.

If you're coming from doing nothing, then doing anything will be an improvement.  If you've been doing something 1 day per week, doing 2 will likely lead to improvement.

Its all about progressive overload and recovery/adaptation.  And that is different for everyone.
