Subject: Will ankle swelling ever go away
I've sprained my left ankle more than a few time sin my life.  Guess it's my weak ankle.  The last time, about a year ago I sprained it BAD... was on crutches for a week.

I've noticed over the last few months that the ankle is still bigger than my right one.  There is no pain and I run on it without issue, but there is still some "swelling".  And swelling is really the wrong word as it's like there is extra "stuff" under the skin.  Again, no pain or redness, it's just bigger and puffier.

Is this scar tissue?

Will it ever go away or will it always be larger?

I had such a bad sprain in a race, I run with an ASO brace. All the time. Compression prevents the swelling most of the time. If it's not warm or hot outside the aso brace alone with a sock underneath does the trick.

But if it's hot, my "bad" ankle swells after running. I've used coach tape to tape it which I like for other things but it was too restrictive for range of motion under the brace. So I tape my ankle with kinesio tape under the aso brace and it doesn't swell up. To be honest I care more in the summer as it's unfashionable to have one ankle fatter than the other. I'm not sure you need the brace and the tape but maybe the tape alone would work.

I know it's a lot of work and I don't know your age. I'm over 40 and have been running since I was 13 so I think some of my issues stem from aged ankle joints.
