Pre-race routine:

Woke up, had some eggs and put on my costume. Drove to pick up the fiance and realized I left part of the costume at home... drove back home.
Event warmup:

Walked around desperately looking for a port-a-john... found one. Settled into the crowd and waited for the race to start. Had a couple people ask to take my picture.
Run

  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

With this being my longest run ever and having only run 3 - 4 times in the last couple of months, I started out trying to run as slowly as possible. At least one of those times, I had to stop after 2 miles with agonizing shin splints... on top of my ongoing PF issues. My shins never really gave me much trouble but my left foot was sore for the first couple miles. But after that the pain subsided and I was able to enjoy the run. Until about mile 5 when it started hurting again.

Luckily, though, at that time we saw some friends from work and spirits were lifted. They were running as a group costume and wanted to/thought they had to stay together at the finish line. Two of the group are very competitive so we hung behind them until the last 100 yards. Then, with a loud "see you later sukaz", we sprinted by them in a goofy run.

I'm very surprised that I was able to run the entire distance and I feel a lot better about my chances at the Shamrock 1/2 in March.
What would you do differently?:

Not buy Asics that led to debilitating shin splints, keeping me from running for 2 months leading up to this race. Other than that, my 'the guy from The Hangover' costume was well received and I had about a half-dozen people want to take their picture taken with me and almost everyone I passed said I nailed it. 'Not at the table Carlos.'
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank a little water, drank 'free' beer, dealt with adoring fans and paparazzi, ate BBQ, tried to keep my feet/calves stretched out, talked to friends and enjoyed a beautiful day on the beach.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inability to train leading up to the race, but it ultimately made it a fun run, instead of a race... and that was really the point of this one.

Event comments:

There were only 3 water stations over the 10k course. I'm used to there being 2-3 for a 5k. Each of the stations consisted of several tables all in a line on one side of the course. This, of course, led to a huge log-jam. We ended up just staying as far away from the stations as possible. Putting them either in the middle of the course or on both sides would have made much more sense and made it possible to serve twice as many people.
