Swim

  • 750 meters
  • 02m 46s / 100 meters
Comments:

Freestyle first 200 metres (being generous) Breast Stroked most of the rest of the race. Did not feel like I could get my heartrate and breathing under control. May not have gave freestyle enough of a chance to kick in and bailed early to the breast stroke. The wetsuit was great. I felt like I could float like a channel marker. The problem was I moved about as fast.
What would you do differently?:

Register for the duathlon like my other land lubber friends. Oh, no wait, youb mean if I were to do it again. I would definitely give the freestyle a longer chance for my breathing to settle in, knowing that no matter how tired I got, I can easily breast stroke
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Quick transition. Very motivated to make up for a slow swim and get out there and pass people.
What would you do differently?:

Get to the transition quicker
Bike
  • 41m 53s
  • 20 kms
  • 28.65 km/hr
Comments:

Made up a lot of ground and started reeling in riders immediately. I passed at least 40 bikes and maybe even pushed it too hard trying to make up ground. The wind was the strongest I have rode in thus far and it felt like I was crawling on the way to the turnaround, but I was easily passing others. The ride back in was very fast. Going with the wind I was in high gear a lot of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Know the course better so I don't have to yell at the dismount guy not giving direction to me
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 25m 42s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 08s  min/km
Comments:

Felt sick to my stomach coming off the bike. This was a combination of pushing too hard on the bike and the gatorade in my stomach being unsettling. Stomach was upset the whole first lap which seriously hampered me. Walked four times the first lap to try and settle it. Second lap stomach eased off and I ran much better but not as fast as my legs could go. A bit disappointing despite having my best ever posted 5K time. I was hoping for a sub 25 min. time, but all considered ok.

OW swimming can do that to you.

If you have narrowed the stomach issues to the Gatorade, you might want to try something else.  Gatorade works for some people, but for others causes the issues you described.  Maybe try Accelerade or Cytomax.

Good job!
