Age Group Rank = 6/18
Pre-race routine:

Woke at three AM. Breakfast of oatmeal and toast with peanut butter. Took vitamins and drank some whey protein. Also took some force factor. did again just before swim. Had a bite of a protein bar just before swim as well. Was feeling a little hungry and weak. I didn't get much sleep the last three days with work and such. Drove the 1.4 hours to race.
Event warmup:

Jogged in place to get heart rate up a little. stretched. Especially the calves. I did something to my calf the last run in training before this race that kept me from finishing the training. this is reoccurring. Swam out and around the first buoy twice.
Swim
  • 11m 50s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Sun made it hard to see anything. I focused on the tree line.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not going to keep stopping when I hit somebody. I tend to stop swimming until they get away from me.
Transition 1
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

First time mounting bike with shoes. A little clumsily as people passing me.
What would you do differently?:

Get up to speed before getting my feet into the shoes. Make sure rubber bands are clear.

Comments:

Trying to get into shoes before getting up some speed caused me to be passed by a few. I had to chuckle a little, but I passed all those individuals after I got going. I'm happy with the bike. A mile or so into the race I noticed that my rubber band on left shoe had not broke. As I was reaching down to break it with my hand, I swerved to the left and nearly caught someone passing me. I'm very excited about my ride. I was passing people the whole way. I got passed of course, but I remember only three passing me.
What would you do differently?:

I slowed at the end. I misjudged how much further I had to go so I stayed behind a slower bike. I'm not going to slow up next time.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

A little wobbly getting the shoes on. Lost my balance because I didn't want to sit on the grass. I also lost time putting a wrap around my calf because of the strain from training. I found out I should have ran without it.
What would you do differently?:

Keep my balance. Make sure I need any wraps and or tape before I waste time applying.
Run
  • 26m 21s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Arrrrrrrrr!!! What if I had not needed to stop and stretch my calves? I had to try and make some time which I thought I did pretty well. My normal run time is 8.1 mm , and I ended up at 8.5. I thought I might be running at 7.5 once I got loosened up because my breathing was indicative of how I usually feel at a 7.5 pace. (No watch) Whatever the case, I did need to stop or I would not have finished.
What would you do differently?:

Not injure myself before a race.
Post race
Warm down:

Very nice ice cold rag was handed me by a very nice volunteer. I put that on my neck and walked around to loosen up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience. Only my second race. Not training right. Injury. Need to practice transitions.

Event comments:

Had a good time. I will look for this race next year and see if I can do it again. It was a fill in for the Indiana tri which was cancelled.

Nice job.  Watch the calf problems.  I've had similar problems twice in the past year.  They can take a long time to heal, depending on the type of injury.

I thought the Sun was a pain for the swim as well.  I really liked having a wave for 50 and over men, and starting AFTER the younger men.  The other way around can be very disheartening, but more typical.

When I finished, I liked the cold wet towel as well, but it was a bit TOO cold for me and I had to wring it out a bit before putting it on my neck.

Keep up the good work!
