Subject: Please tell me about EMS and TENS
I am interested in getting a machine for tight muscles, and lower back issues I have from time to time...I've also heard that EMS will actually help me develop and tone muscles? That sounds like marketing but I really don't know. There is Dr. Ho...but I find him kinda shifty from his infomercials and heard he has run into trouble with the FDA in the states. That being said I've seen a lot of good references about him on the net...but also bad ones...just confuses me more...I've looked at ldmedsupply and that's its. They seem to be in the right price range but before I buy anything I need to know more:-Whats the difference between EMS and TENS? Is the theory sound?-What is a good machine? -Anything I should steer clear of? Or consider in a purchase? Should I even bother getting one? I see a chiropractor and massage therapist semi regularly. Thanks for any help!

Hi, your chiro should be able to tell you some info about EMS and TENS.

EMS in theory is supposedly able to build muscle without requiring you to work out.  The theory doesn't stand up in practice results as far as I know.  It induces muscle contraction and so it is used for rehabilitation.

TENS tends to be more analgesic in effect so more relaxing.  Better to relax the muscles.

If you have some recurring problems in your low back that involve muscle spasm I don't think you'd want to use EMS to alleviate any discomfort.  It might actually aggravate your issues.

As for Dr Ho - I know nothing of the man but I have had good results with his TENS unit.  If you do buy one of his make sure you get one with 4 electrodes rather than two. (I always prefer to surround the area you're focusing on).
