Pre-race routine:

Arrive early , set up in transition , walk though entrances and exits , visualize race later , relax , eat bagel and some chocolate , drink water , debated wether to wear my new wetsuit or not.
Event warmup:

Watch Olympic waves start , looked for currents or how many breakers groups had to negotiate. Decided against wetsuit , wait until 20 mins before wave start to enter water do easy 100 m freestyle and 100 breastroke. Water a little refreshing , probably around 65 F . Big well spaced breakers 4-5 feet but No side current.
Swim
  • 09m 3s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lots of traffic , some mild contact at start and near buoys , mostly at my legs , Kept swimming and adjusted course a little.
Heartrate in the 140s during the whole swim . Breathing and sighting were the best I have experienced in a race so far. I think my stroke got cleaner for the last two thirds. I swam all of it breastroke.
What would you do differently?:

Improve my freestyle endurance in the pool before next race .
Swim in the ocean 6-7 times with the wetsuit until next race in september.
Transition 1
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

Get everything on in my Transition area , socks , shoes , gloves , sunglasses , Tri shirt, HR monitor , helmet and jog through Trans area. Lots of stuff . Take my time and do it all right, then take off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 37m 36s
  • 12.68 miles
  • 20.23 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride , Hard to ride at speed 1st and last mile. Narrow , crowded .
What would you do differently?:

Ride course 2-3 days before ,
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Ideal , took two waters put one in pocket .
Used them up in the run .
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 27m 24s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Warm but kept cool with water on head, drank only a little.
Best 5k time I have ever done in a Triathlon . PR .

First two miles were at 8:30 pace . Last one at 9:00 pace.
What would you do differently?:

Continue conditioning with long run and track speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked 20 mins , Eat , drink . Removed bike from Transition.
Relax and strech

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim endurance , and more experience with the wetsuit.
Installing aerobars.
Loose weight.

Event comments:

Very well organized , Nice food afterwards.
Pre race meeting , could not hear speakers , Needs a PA system with more
speakers

Performance: Good
In the 140s (easy controled breathing) until long run on the beach pushed it up to 150s. Time above is from gun time to my exiting the water, There is a rather Long Run from the beach until T1 timing mat I clocked separately at 2:45.
Suit: Zoot shorts No wetsuit
Course: Around small two small green buoys , many yellow lifeguards on boards make seeing the course very easy. C shape , about 150 out , 150 across and 150 back to the beach. Since I do 9 min for 400 m in the pool , this course distance actually felt right.

Nice race!  Congratulations on your PR on the run.  Liked reading about not wearing a wet suit since I won't be wearing one for my tri either.  (some good inspiration for me!)  Nice fast bike split too!
