Some years back, I had a conference to attend in Austin, TX. Cleaning out my office this week, I found an old notebook from that trip, and in it something I scribbled at the time. I'd forgotten it, but I felt like sharing it now.
"He wanted thirty-six cents.
That's all he asked for.
I didn't have any change, so I gave him a buck,
and in exchange, I got E.T.'s whole life story.
Born and raised in Louisiana,
contemporary of Terry Bradshaw,
played against him in football -
- on the lose, of course -
now resident of Austin, TX, USA.
I heard his memories of his own glory days,
his losing-end memories of segregation,
his take on the current war.
But I also got pointed to some decent barbecue, and
some mighty fine music,
and some advice that might yet turn out good.
It could be the best dollar I ever spent."
Thanks, everyone, and have a great day.
