Hello. It may be time for me to add a Tri to my bucket list. I've completed five marathons and am looking for a new challenge. The running and the bike may be easier for me to train for than the swim. We don't live near the ocean, or a "swimmable" lake. Weather here is also not always conducive to outside swimming even if we had a location. I am a member of a health club with a small pool that I can do laps in. During the colder, wetter months, I could swim, cycle and run, all indoors. Is this worth it, or do I need to "man up" and find a place to swim outside (probably 90 minutes from home)?

My goal is to start with a Sprint, then move to an Olympic. If all continues well and I'm still interested, do an Iron Man before I'm 60 (56 now).

Any suggestions for swim training? Any suggestions overall?

Thank you,

Welcome!  You definitely don't need a small lake or pond to do the bulk of your swimming in - your health club pool will do just fine.  Though when you get a month or two away from your triathlon, trying to get a few open water swims in will definitely help - though not critical.

Deciding on an Ironman as my first venture into triathlon was greeted with incredulity and astonishment combined with a hint of, "well, you're full of yourself aren't you?" and, "a bit ambitious?"

I never imagined that 350 yards broken down into 7 REALLY long lanes would be so big! I gasped out loud and told Grady that maybe I had underestimated the swim.
