hello to all!

juts thought id introduce my self . been a lurker for a while - never been an athlete really - i started training up in 2012 but got injured the week before my first 10k race - had been planning on a doing a sprint later in the season. 5 to 6 years ago i went into a swimming pool to go for a swim with the crazy notion that it would help me quit smoking - i was right - i swam on 50m length and nearly died - and this was after two previous attempts to go swimming where i suffered so much anxiety i couldnt get in the pool.

Injuries are getting better and decided to set some new goals - not sure if i will ever get to a triathlon - doctor suggests not running - but we will see...

on and off swimmer - work around alot so its not allways easy to get a routine - but really wanting to make an effort considering the improvements im getting from IMS / dry needling therapy. Less than two weeks ago i got back in the pool for the first time in over 3 months - today was my 4th session and i managed what i consider a respectable 10min 15sec 500m crawl and a nice pace . no tuck turns and a bit of slow moving traffic in the pool - as part of my work out. I know pros will laugh at this with their sub 5minutes but im just a regular guy - never had swim coaching out side of the You tube and the Web Having some thoughts having read through some other forums and articles on other sites and cant help but think ... is there a point - i mean it sounds like every one goes in it to win it and has trained since they were a child in at least one discipline.... at 33 i know i can never reach a top competative level but i guess it makes it more fun to swim if i think im aiming for something and i have always liked the idea of adventure racing / iron man but never ever thought i could even begin to try and do something like that - now i kind of decided to try and prove myself wrong - at least until i injure myself again... which will most likely happen running on a road... But pan is for this winter to work on the swim and get back to lifting some weights and get the strength back and (slowly) build up some trail running in to the swim and see how that goes..... but yeah i've gone on a lot.... But hello to all whom dwell here.

Hi Tom,  Welcome to BT.  Since you've been a lurker you probably know your way around fairly well.  If they start up the mentor groups in the spring they are great for beginners so definitely join one or two.  I also recommend reading race reports and volunteering to help out at triathlons.  Both are great for learning, inspiration and meeting others into triathlons.  Please get involved in discussions here and ask questions.  You'll find people pretty willing to help.

You sound as though you are coming to terms with swimming and feeling a bit more at home in the water.  This will help you a lot.  Your 500m in 10:15 is actually pretty decent for a beginner and at 33, you can still gain a lot of speed in the water.  I'm double your age and my last 1000m time trial (TT) was :24:08 and now I might be able to swim 1000m in :22:00 (I hope).  Coaching makes a huge difference to your swimming so look for a swim group to train with and talk to people.

Don't worry about how good other people are just do your best and have fun.  I tend to be "back of the pack (BOP)" slow and I still have a lot of fun.  It's about working with what you have and training yourself to be the best you can.  Maybe you'll surprise yourself.

As for injuries, we're all pushing ourselves to get better, faster, stronger and that raises our risks but if you learn how to train and be careful you can get a lot stronger and avoid injury (or keep it to a minimum).  Find people who know about training and consider some coaching to help you out.

Keep training and have fun.
