Or does being very physically active mean it's OK?Sugar is a total waste of calories. I don't touch the stuff. Sugar is Evil (1)
Sugar is OK for People Who Are Fit (2)
Concluding comments (3) Lack of physical activity, more so than sugar, is the greater threat to our health. Given that so many people are overfat and underfit, a diet low in sugars and starches is likely a good idea for them. But for sports-active, fit people—who are at lower risk for heart disease, diabetes, and obesity—sugar and carbs are not toxic but rather a helpful way to enhance athletic performance. The one size diet does not fit all. No one is suggesting that athletes should eat more sugar, but rather understand that, as an athlete, you can embrace a sports diet that includes an appropriate balance of carbohydrate (sugars and starches) in each meal. Strive for a healthy eating pattern that includes 85% to 90% quality foods and 10% to 15% whatever. Some days, whatever might be an apple; other days, it might be a slice of apple pie.

I've found the best way to handle carbs AND sugar is to periodize my eating around my training. If I have a hard afternoon workout I might increase my carb intake at lunch that day to ensure I'm properly fueled for the workout. I will try to time my workout so that it ends right around dinner time, which means it's easy to add carbs in the form of sweet potatoes, rice, etc. If I have an easy or recovery day I might limit my carbs as I am working on some body recomp issues. I'm not a huge fan of sugar as a whole, but it can and does serve a purpose. For me, that tends to be during workouts, either hard or long workouts. If I'm riding for an hour I won't take anything in, but if I'm riding for several hours I will usually have a serving or two of something like Infinit to fuel my workout. Heck, I even timed my kids "taxes" from Halloween to be post workout! Those Snickers and Almond Joy's were well deserved! |
