Total Time = 1h 20m 59s
Overall Rank = 1/137
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/10
Pre-race routine:

Pancakes at home, loaded up the car, and drove out. Plenty of time to set up transition, and was sipping electrolytes.
Event warmup:

10 minute run, 10 minute spin. Ran out of time to get a few warm up strokes in because I left the swim cap in my car.
Swim
  • 15m 48s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started up front and hopped on the feet of the leader of our wave. Stayed right there for the entire swim, amazing! I was checking his sighting with my own on the way out, and he had us going perfectly straight, so after the first turn I just trusted it. I was definitely warm in the suit, so when I briefly debated going around him on the home stretch, I thought better of wasting that effort for at most a couple seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, never drafted so perfectly before.
Transition 1
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

The transition itself was fine, got out of the suit with ease, and was able to get my bike out from under the very low rack no problem. But after crossing the mat to the mount line, I didn't jump on and fumbled around trying to click in. Frustrating - maybe it's time to practice a flying mount again.
What would you do differently?:

Flying mount
Bike
  • 46m 12s
  • 18 miles
  • 23.38 mile/hr
Comments:

Smashed this ride. Had a tailwind going out, and headwind coming back. Stayed aero disciplined throughout. Made it to the front of the race about 4-5 miles in, leaving behind the two guys I came out of the water with. I was hoping to have a higher watt output, but considering the speed I managed, can't really complain.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, really good ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Another poor transition, this time actually in the area. Could not get the damn running shoes on. The tongue of the Vaporflys is a real pain.
What would you do differently?:

Get the shoes on faster
Run
  • 16m 59s
  • 3 miles
  • 05m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Solid, though I was a little faster last year. Had to find that top gear when I had a pretty sizable lead. Hit the first mile sub-6, and my main motivation was not to have any about 6.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Cheered in some friends, then went for a short cool down jog.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

With bigger races coming up, this was a train through, with some long and hard runs earlier in the week, that def carried some fatigue into this. But despite not being able to reach the top gear, still had a really good performance, obvious. A course PR, and back to back champ here is pretty cool.

Event comments:

Love having this local race, can't wait to go for the threepeat next year!

Wow - great race, Rob.  First overall and as you noted you left some time out there.  Ever considered racing nationals?  It's driveable this year from New York (Atlantic City).
