OK - so I wasn't the biggest Phelps fan to begin with but today he did something which demonstrated a level of sportmanship that I haven't seen since the Seoul Olympics.

Phelps has withdrawn from Saturday's 4x100 medley relay final after beating Crocker in the 100M butterfly. Instead, the 19-year-old gave up his relay spot to Crocker.

As much as I admire Phelps, I think this gesture may be more practical than anything. Since Phelps swam the semi-finals he will get whatever medal the Americans get in the relay. So he wins whether he swims or not. Swimming 18 swims is pretty demanding even for a fast 19 year old. So bowing out was the really smart thing to do. He really just wanted to be Cocker in the 100 fly, becuz Cocker beat him at the World Championships. He did what he wanted and came off as a gentleman doing it. Smart kid.
