Master 1249 Lexington, Kentucky | Subject: Bigger People -> Bigger Cars There was a blurb on the news yesterday that Ford is going to increase the size of the seats in their 2008 models to accomodate the expanding waistlines of American drivers. On one hand, it's only common sense to adapt your product to your customers, but on the other, it seems like our society is just giving up on the idea of healthy diets. Your thoughts? |

Expert 882 Fort Bragg | Subject: RE: Bigger People -> Bigger Cars Business is business. I can see why they're doing it from an economic standpoint. But... from a social standpoint, I think it's sad. Just plain sad. -- It's like watching people get upset about the seats on airplanes. I had the pleasure of studying Admiralty law and I learned a lot about the precursor to air travel. And quite honestly, passengers are just cargo. The more space you want, the more you pay. |

Extreme Veteran 596 Worcester, MA | Subject: RE: Bigger People -> Bigger Cars SO, my question is what happens to someone like me who my wife says has no A$$. It is kind of sad that this is happening, but at the same time, it's happening all over the place. I mean think about what the #1 complaint about going to a ball game is - aside of the price, it's the seat size. I mean, I"m 5'7" 180 and a little chubby, but I'm lucky when I fly or go someplace, I can fit in almost all things. Watch people on planes, etc. It's crazy that we should have to cater to people on that level, but at the same time, we SHOULD cater to the guy who is 6'8 or the pregnant lady. Anyway, I don't want to sound mean or get into a discussion about how overweight people are treated, but there are limits, in my opinion. |

Master 1362 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Bigger People -> Bigger Cars Hmmmm... I'd almost think there's be some peer pressure NOT to buy a Ford if that's the case. Yeah, everyones way too supersized and doesn't do anything about it, but everyone still trys to "look" slimmer (I can't imagine all these late night infomercials being on all the time otherwise). If I wanted that perception of being slimmer, I'd wear black clothing, suck in the gut, and NOT drive around in an oversized Ford. Will they come with bumper stickers that read "my a__ was too big for a chevy"? Edited by luminary01 2006-08-23 10:41 PM |

Expert 1195 Shelby Twp | Subject: RE: Bigger People -> Bigger Cars That comment was hilarious!! I too think that i guess as a company your supposed to give the people what they want, or need, but yikes, bigger seats! i can see making someone buy two plane tickets if they have to.. i mean if youve ever been next to someone on a plane that should have two seats you know why they could make people buy two.. but thats not discrimination, thats just reality.. if you cant fit in the seat anymore, A) a company overhaul of seats? or B) the person just buys two tickets, ok option b is the answer from a economic stand point. I wonder how the bigger seats will go over... |

Master 1862 San Mateo, CA | Subject: RE: Bigger People -> Bigger Cars The same thing is happening with clothes. I'm on the short and fit side of things, and within the past year, many department stores have stopped carrying pants in my size, with the excuse that the smaller sizes don't sell very well. My argument is that if you don't carry the product, then of course it's not going to sell very well. Why is it that when stores previously carried the smaller men's sizes that they were always sold out? Obviously, there is a market. Hello! Also, I like how manufacturers are changing the labelling on their clothes. Forget about finding dress shirts and slacks....that's just a nightmare. I've become very familiar with simply having of my work clothes custom made to fit me, especially since supersizing my a$$ for the sake of fitting into ready-made clothing in department stores is not likely to happen. Also, since when are men's "small" briefs made to fit a 30-32" waist? At one time (well, not long ago) a "small" was 28-30. So, now we're deluding outselves into believing people are still small by changing the labels on the clothing. What will happen when a small becomes 32-34 and my waist hasn't kept pace with the increase?

No sympathy here since Abercrombie & Fitch only make pants up to a 38".

Regular 114 Louisville, KY | Subject: RE: Bigger People -> Bigger Cars I have a hard time finding jeans that fit me at all. Out of 40 different kinds of jeans only about 7 have 30x32. It drives me insane. Last time I bought a pair I had to get a "low rise" pair of jeans. I didn't know such a thing existed for guys! I think the companies should pander to me since statistically I'm the one who should live longer and so buy more of their stuff. |

Um, I have no idea what sizes they sell at AF. I tend to avoid clothing that's already freyed and wrinkled when I buy it. Heh! Not sure where else you shop, but I see p-l-e-n-t-y of pants over 38". What kills me is that clothing manufacturers can make a pair of pants in a 46Wx29L, but they can't make a 29Wx29L. What's up with that? Edited by betyoursilver 2006-08-24 12:49 PM |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Bigger People -> Bigger Cars If you think about it, society in general is upsizing. Bigger houses, bigger vechiles, bigger meal portions, super sizing, etc. Kinda annoying if you ask me. I mean, if we start accomadating lager people, why not accomdate others such as us short people who have a hard time reaching things in groceries stores on the top shelves?? Just using that as an example, and there's several more. I mean, if you're going to accomodate larger people that's pretty much saying- hey, it's ok if you're overwight and have health problems because we'll make it more comfortable and easier for you?? What??? What about peoples' live sand health at risk?? But I guess Ford is smart because they obviously know what the majority of the people are willing to buy. |

Nooo....not spandex underwear! Look on the bright side- you wouldn't even have to worry about underwear if you just wear your tri shorts all the time! It's a 2 for 1 deal- you can't beat that! Just think- in winter you can just wear running tights. No need to worry. Edited by runnergirl29 2006-08-24 2:05 PM |

I'm sure spandex running tights would feel rather unusal underneath a pair of wool 3-season dress slacks. ;-) On the bright side, I can always shower with the spandex tights on, and then not have to worry about washing them. What a fantastic time saver! |

Veteran 130 East Lansing, MI | Subject: RE: Bigger People -> Bigger Cars From a business standpoint, it's a good idea. They're doing the same thing in movie theaters and resturaunts...making the booths huge and the seats even bigger. In recent years the seats have gone from 18in wide to 24in wide, and they have taken out armrests so that people can fit in the seats..it's crazy. |

What a fantastic time saver! I woudln't even wear the dress pants- go all out in spandex. BSM would be very proud. I bet once everyone started wearing running tights and tri shorts to work and in public more often that clothing lines would start making more smaller/regular sizes again. |

Expert 882 Fort Bragg | Subject: RE: Bigger People -> Bigger Cars I had to buy the new Army Combat Uniform. I went to the military clothing sales store to buy my size, "Medium Regular." You would think that they would have those. Nope, they had plenty of "Small Extra Long" and "Extra Large Short" sizes though. Of course, that could very well be encouraging that there were a lot medium size Soldiers out there and not too many Extra Larges. |
