Okay so I'm going to attempt my first Sprint-Tri in August. The swim for me still sucks balls!

I wanted to ask people what type of tri their first tri was (sprint, oly etc...) How long they trained for it, and what there overall ability (athletically) was before they began training.

I guess I'll start:

- Sprint Tri
- 10 weeks (come Sprint Tri date)
- Total NON-endurance athelete (never swam for distance, never-ever cycled, never ever ran more than 1.5 miles), pretty much a fast-twitch type of guy (baseball, football anything that required quick and short burst of energy)

My first was a sprint....1/2 mile swim, 18 mile bike, 4 mile run

I trained for 7 weeks...decided to do it after reading an article in Men's Health.
I come from an athletic background, but never any endurance sports.  Just focusing on lifting weights and playing racquetball for the last several years.  Hadn't ran over a mile in 10 years.  Did the tri at 220 (I'm 6'4").  Swam the 1/2 in 16 minutes, averaged a little over 18 miles an hour on the bike, and ran a 9:30 per mile pace.  Not great, but I was happy with that only after 7 weeks of training.  I would tell you to run as much as possible.  The run was bad for me because I only ran about once a week while training.

My first tri (Sprint...500m/11.4/5k) is coming up on July 19th.

I will have trained just over 6 weeks for it.

I have a background in soccer but have not been in shape since high school.  I have no background in endurance sports.  I hated running, could not swim more than 50 yards, and had never seriously biked either.

My first is a Sprint, coming up in 9 days.  I've been training since April, roughly 12 weeks or so.  Here's what I've logged for time (mileage for bike/run not accurate as I don't track indoor trainer or treadmill miles, yardage for swim is accurate):
2009 totals
Bike:27h 03m 21s  - 177.23 Mi
Run:8h 11m 07s  - 8.58 Mi
Swim:15h 38m 31s  - 33950 Yd

I wish that I either started training for this earlier or that the race was a couple months further away as I'm just now starting to settle into a groove training wise.  I had pushed too hard too soon in week 4 or so, and had to ease off the running.  Plus the physical adjustments your body goes through while getting broken in to this type of training keeps you from progressing as fast as you do once your more acclimated to it....But I'm ready and we'll see what happens on the 11th!!!

Good luck to you!!

I will be racing my first sprint on August 30, check my totals for may and june.
In april I spent maybe a few weeks just running on the treadmill, no swimming or cycling.
May and june I try to bike, swim and run 2x a week, always increasing 10% from the week before, time or distance.
I have had a down 5 days or so as well, just to relax, vacation, heal.
I train roughly 30 to 45 minutes a day for each discipline, through in some basic strength training every ten days or so.
july i intend to increase duration which then increases distance to prepare for the shorter and intense distance in the sprint.
Currently averaging 26-27km/h on the bike, around a 9min/mile pace, swimming is still horrible, completing 800m around the 30 minute mark right  now.

My 1st tri was a mini sprint in reverse order (5k run, 9mi bike, 100m swim). I trained for about 8 weeks beforehand.

Previous athletic background included running track senior year in college (sprints), the occasional 5k road race, and casual biking. When I started swimming at the beginning of those 8 weeks, I couldn't make it 100 meters without getting winded.

First tri was a sprint on 6/14/09.

Had been running regularly (and have completed 4 half marathons) since September 2007
Had been swimming 2-3 times a week for about 8 months
Put the bike on the trainer in Jan and took it out around May (so not really that long)

First tri in three weeks.  I picked up my new bike three days ago.  I have not ridden in 7 yeras, I used to be 150 mile a week rider.  In those seven years I did nothing but gain weight.  Last Sept I started losing weight and this spring started running.  In April I decided to run the Seattle Rock and Roll half marathon.  With about 6 weeks to the race I injured my knee, and swam a few times to keep moving while I rested my knee.  The half was last weekend and went well.  I have swam a few times, and feel comfortable that I will be able to easily cover the 440 yard distance.  The biking has gone well so far.  Two rides, yesterday and the day before.  First was 7 miles, and yesterday was 18.  Today I am going to do my first Brick.  My goal is to finish, experience it and have fun.  I will set my next goal once this first is out of the way.

Good luck

My first tri was a sprint and all I did was hop in the pool three times and do two 45 minute bricks.  I also raced in on a mountain bike.

I was a competitive swimmer as child and teen.  It's been 15+ years so I didn't expect to be fast, but I knew I could swim.  I had no biking experience other than spin class.  I had done several 5K's and running 5-10 miles/week had been in my repertoire for a few years.  I had also been a fitness professional for a decade so my cardio system felt prepared.

Not enough...

I'm 40 year old, overweight and out of shape.  My first tri was on Father's Day.  It was a sprint: 1/2 mile swim, 13 mile bike, 5k run.

I loosely followed the 16 Week Sprint - Swim Focused plan.

My swim went OK, my bike ok (on an old mtn bike), run cramped up and sucked hard.  Neglected my bike training and underestimated the effect it would have on me.  I also just simply did not put in enough miles/time.

Here's my training volume:

2009 totals
Bike:    15h 01m 53s  - 45.36 Mi
Run:    20h 10m 31s  - 110.59 Mi
Swim:    16h 59m 46s  - 39500 Yd

I underestimated the entire event - won't make that mistake again...

First tri coming up 8/1, will be a sprint (1/2m,14m,5k).

I've trained about 4 months.  Hadn't done much the past 2-3 years, but did some adventure racing for a year or 2 before that.  Also swam competitively through high school...but hadn't done any swimming since (18 years).

I started a little over a year ago and competed my first one after a month of training.  I was a good runner (typically very high in my AG at most running races) a strong cyclist since I spent a lot of time injured from running riding with fast cyclists, but poor swimmer.  I chose a small race to start out and thank goodness I did.  It was 411meters swim, 14 mile bike, 3.1 mile run.  I finished very well due to the other two sports.  It did not start well.  I went out too fast, wound up doing about 300 meters as back stroke because I got caught up in the fury and went out too hard and had a difficult time catching my breath. (Kind of like those kids at races that go out screaming fast and then you pass at about the mile mark) but I was definitely questioning why I would do this and not just stick to running.  One year later still chipping away at the swim.  Haven't raced yet this year.

PS I still had a blast, the swim sets you up to pass a lot of people later so you got that going for you!

My first was an Oly.

I trained for 12 weeks.

Before starting training I consistently ran 5 miles 4 times a week, had never swum, and biking consisted of a leisurely couple of miles on the hybrid from time to time.

Ran my first Sprint in June.

Started getting in shape (for 5k's/10k's) the previous fall.  Ran a 5k in December.  Ran a 7k in March.  Decided to do the Tri, so I hit the swimming very hard and biking somewhat from March to June.  I finished (800yard swim, 15mi bike, 3mi run) in 2:02.  I was not ready for the biking.

So for my August Tri, I am hitting the biking very hard, maintaining the running and swimming.

for me starting training for a tri was not a zero to 60 measure so it is hard to say.

in high school i was already swimming and running competitively.  decided to do one and i rode a few rides and continued swim/run in the summer.  so consciously training for the tri 1.5 months - if you count the 5 years i'd been swimming and year i'd been running without thinking of tris that's a different number

after  20+ year hiatus i had a similar entry to tris.  i had been running for 4 years, still swimming nd biking recreationally and lifting 3 years.  when i decided i want to do tris - i bought a cheap road bike and actually trained for the tri for 7 months.

1. Sprint only with a 4 mi run

2. Signed up in Dec., did it mid-April, but only started serious training in Jan. So about 3.5 months

3. Complete couch potato and seriously overweight for most of my adult life too

How well do you want to do on it?  I'm doing my first Sprint in Sept and I've been running about 3-4 times per week since April, I bike about every other day, and I'm going to start swimming sometime in July.  I'm not looking to come in first, just not embarass myself.

My first tri was a sprint, I trained for 10 weeks before the race putting in 3-6 hours of training a week. I came to triathlon from distance running (30+ miles per week) but hadn't swam in 4 years or biked since high school.

My first race went really well and I was pleased with my performance.

My first tri was a reverse mini 5K, 10 mile bike, 150 yds in a pool. I started training mid March of this year and the tri was the end of April, so 5-1/2 weeks? I was also not an endurance athlete. Weight training only for the past three years. I had attempted a few random 5K's over the past few years, but it was very much a run/walk deal.

I used a couch2 5K program to ensure that I was able to run the entire 5K at my tri. I taught myself to swim freestyle, did the TI thing, and spent more time swimming than anything else--and 150 miles isn't too much of a challenge anyway. I got my new bike about 2 weeks before the event and had borrowed a MTB for about three training rides before my bike came, so not much training there. I really had no intention of actually doing a tri this year when I started training, for fun, in March. But because of the type of tri it was I realized it was entirely doable, so I did it, had a blast and hope to do three more in the next couple of months.

My first tri will be a sprint on August 1st.

Average fitness level. Been training since jan and  basically make up my weekly schedule as i go along. Cycle to work 3x and average 2 runs a week. Mainly focusing on my weakest  (and most worrisome !!!)  discipline, swimming (breaststroke only). Aim to put in at least 20 more pool and 2 OW swims before the event.

June's totals:
Bike:     17h 00m        -  210 Mi
Run:       6h 11m 41s  -    34.21 Mi
Swim:     9h 15m        - 9291 Yd
