I just started riding with a girl (woman) who is a nurse.  She runs a fitness program at her hospital called "Adult Onset Athlete".  I love this term.  I have certainly always been athletic, but since tri-training I really consider myself an athlete.  An adult onset athlete....isn't that a cool term?

Just thought I'd share.

Thanks for passing that on -- I like the term as well.

I didn't start leading an active lifestyle until about 12 years ago, when I was in my mid 30s. It's surprising how often people now assume I was always "athletic." All I have to say to them is that if I can do it, there's no reason they can't!

I used to fake menstral cramps to get out of phys ed in high school. I didn't want to sweat and mess up my "big hair".
I started running about 7 years ago. The first time someone referred to me as "athletic", I was stunned! Then thought, "well, maybe I am an athlete, afterall!"

I love it!  This totally and completely applies to me.  I was always an active kid playing sports and such but found music and theater to be my real talent in HS.  I've definitely never considered myself an athlete but I'm working on that.  I never thought I could run for an hour and I sure as hell never thought that I would ENJOY running for an hour.

I am the same way....I used to say I only ran if someone was chasing me....now my 70min. runs are my favorite workouts.......1/2 psycho, 1/2 athlete.

I might sound a little bitter, but if only my primary/secondary schoolmates and gym teachers could see now. Who would have thought that plumpy here would one day be training for a triathlon. Muhahah.. .

I LOVE IT!  I was a totally inactive kid who was smoking a pack a day by age 14.  I didn't lie to get out of PhyEd, I just didn't bother to show up.  MY joke was that I'd only run if a large knife weilding psycho - or a cop - was chasing me.  During my divorce I learned what a stress buster excersize was and here I am eight years later and still hooked.

Whoever said "if only my primary/secondary school mates could see me now..."  yeah, I'm with you!

Yep, that's me too. In gym in 7th grade, I just stood in the outfield and watched the game, never coming in for inning changes. Until very recently, the only sports I was involved with involved my horses. Now that I'm in better shape and 30 pounds lighter, I feel great. Just today someone remarked on my "transformation" to an athlete. Big grin!

Definately and Adult Onset Athlete -- brought on I think by a mixture of midlife crisis and couch potato itis.   It wasn't until I started triathlon that I started to actually visualize myself as an athlete, and that's after 5 marathons in the past 7 years or so.  Believe it or not, my first race ever was a 1/2 marathon, 4 weeks before the first marathon.

30th High School class reunion is coming up in a couple of years.  It's going to be GREAT fun to share with them my ATHLETIC succeses.  I was definately the 98 lb non-jock weakling growing up!

So, definately Adult Onset Athlete here!

My first tri event the announcer said for the athletes to get into the water for the start the race was gonna start shortly. So i waited and began to think the person was rude for giving all of the athletes the chance to get used to the water before the race and here I was waiting to be told to get in the water. That's when it hit me I was the only one standing on the beach waiting. That I was one of the athletes he was talking about.

Love it!!! I never was into organized sports and hated cardio (running still not my favorite). But I became interested in tri's when friends were doing it and then found it to be addictive.

I love to hear myself say 'My Coach.' It's something I thought I'd never say, especially as an adult. Seeing her at the finish line was the best sight after my first Olympic distance.

Also I've been very fortunate in the fact I have friends who are triathletes and I couldn't have asked for a better tri community. They helped keep me chugging along, especially on those difficult days.

Since we're here, can we add to it say Adult Onset Tri-Athlete? ??
