Subject: New - with swim questions
Hey all, I intro'd myself about a week and a half ago. Got up at 5 this morn to go swim for the first time in many years at the park district. The pool is 25 yds. I did probably 6 or 8 laps (stopping every once in a while for a brief breather), I didn't count because I was amazed at how bad I was doing. I run often and thought it would have been a litlle easier. Here are my q's- How many yds are most beginner sprint swims? Some of the entry forms I have read online just state the length in meters. Any recommendations on the fastest way to improve my swim stamina or should I just keep swimming. I know technique has a lot to do with it, but I don't have anyone to watch and correct me. Also I can't figure out how to check my posts in my control panel, I have just been going in and clicking unsubscribe and viewing from there.
Thanks C

Welcome, and yes you need to just keep swimming. As far as technique, I ordered the Total Immersion "Freestyle Made Easy" DVD this spring and have found it very helpful in producing skills. You can get a good look at their style by going to their website www.totalimmersion.net Start watching some of their video clips for free and you will become jealous with how easy they make it look!

Good luck.

Welcome to BT.

Swimming is hard at first if you have limited experience with it. It takes some time and work before you start to feel comfortable with it, but it will come.

Most sprint swims are between 400 and 800 yards/meters.  They're close enough that when considering a swim distance, a 400 yard swim can be considered comparable to a 400 meter swim.

As to checking your posts, I'm not sure specifically what you're looking to do. Is it just keeping track of the threads you've posted to?

I am a proud endorser of TI...

To go from meters to yards, multiply by 1.1.  Example: 400m = 440yds, 800m = 880 yds
To go from yards to meters, divide by 1.1.

To calculate tenths of a mile, multiply by 1760.
Examples:
My first sprint tri is a 0.3 mile swim = 0.3 x 1760 = 528 yds
My second sprint tri is a 0.4 mile swim = 0.4 x 1760 = 704 yds

Good luck with your swim training...

Yeah, if I go back in to BT the next day or so after posting. How do I find my post to see if there were any responses? I know I can get instant e-mail which would tell me if there was a response but I would rather turn off that feature since I have multiple users on my computer. 400-800 yards WOW I have a lot of work ahead of me!

I find that my swim performance is highly affected my my nutrition. If I swim early in the morning and I don't eat or don't enough enough energy foods I feel completely wasted in the pool.

I thought about that, but the morning is my only opportunity to swim.

Thanks, and I think I just figured out how to stop the e-mail notifications everytime someone posts. The instant e-mail notification was set to "default" so I checked it to "No". Can someone reply to this so I can see if it worked?
Thanks

A really good breakfast before swimming is:

A piece of high fiber whole grain bread
2 tsp of natural peanut butter
1/2 of banana

Make it into a sandwich. I usually make 2, one for about 30 minutes before my swim (I eat in the car on the way there) and one for after. It sits great on my stomach and I have no isuses at all.....

Much thanks!

Man I don't know if I can eat at 5AM but I'll give it a whirl. I ran 2 miles this morn and followed it up with a carnation instant breakfast. Is that OK? I usually have a snack likea granola bar an hour or two later.

Sometimes I just make it with low sugar grape jelly instead of the banana..... the smuckers low sugar jelly is good. I would imagine honey would also be good, too.

I don't think I've ever met anyone who didn't like bananas.... that's ok, I don't eat any kind of seafood. We all have our food issues....

Seriously though, natures own double fiber bread has like 5 grams of fiber per slice, and it tastes really good. I get the smart balance natural peanut butter. It has zero trans fats and it has the good omega fatty acids in it. It doesn't separate as much as some of the other natural pb's and doesn't have to be refrigerated.

It seems it's just enough food to fuel me up without causing problems like cramps. I like saving the other mini sandwich for after the workout. Keeps me from getting hungry right away.

Hi, I really need to introduce myself too...I've been lurking...ANYWAY...I found that asking around for someone that swims helped me tons! I never even knew this particular friend had been a competitive swimmer during high school and college. She has come to open lap swim and watched me and then tore my form apart. She has me doing different exercises in the pool both for my form and for breathing. So ask around in your community and your friends for someone to help you train. Good luck!

What exactly cause the cramps in your side I sometimers get while running?

Not sure, but one of the ways I deal with it then (I believe called a side stitch) is to raise your arms over your head and stretch. This stretches out the diaphragm and muscles and seems to help get rid of it...

Usually I only get a side stitch if I've got food or water sloshing around in my stomach....

To my knowledge, medical science has yet to pin down the cause of side stitches.

I do know someone who swears that doing a somersault will make them go away. I haven't tried it, but that's because I'm kind of a spaz and don't trust myself not to end up with a really embarrassing injury.
