An ellipsis is a set of three periods ( . . . ) indicating an omission.

Each period should have a single space on either side, except when adjacent to a quotation mark, in which case there should be no space.

I wonder how many people actually type it with the spaces.

On a humorous note my wife has been learning a lot from our children in the usage of ... in text messaging these days.  Apparently it means something to the effect of "sigh" or "i have nothing to say".  But if you end a sentence in ... it's supposed to mean something as well...  (but I don't know what)

It's amazing how much proper writing is getting destroyed by technology.

My son sent me an essay he wrote for law school. I noticed he did not use two spaces after periods and the start of a new sentence. He laughed and that I needed to get with the times......called me old school. I did some checking and confirmed he was correct, I am old school. Evidently the practice started with the old typewriters but computers automatically adjust spacing of sentences. Nevahtheless.....I cannot and stop doing the "period space space". It muscle memory.

On a similar note, I also consistently misspell because as becuase. Fortunately auto correct cleans up behind me. I just find it fascinating that I make this typo without even thinking about what I am typing.

There is no way I will only type one space following a period.  It just ain't right . . .

I am over 40, learned typing on an IBM Selectric, and will not change my ways.  I will continue to use two spaces after end punctuation, but will use monospaced fonts in order to make the usage correct.

OMG, I have never heard of this as being a thing.  I have always used the double space after every sentence.

No.....way.......that is all. (almost)

Besides, when I use it I don't call it an ellipsis......mine are just  "a bunch of dots"....they have no meaning...they just are.

I think if you put extra spaces in there you are really failing to connect the dots....

    WOULD YOU STOP!

Dammit I can't believe ANOTHER thing we have in common.

Yeah, I'm the same way.  Learned on an old manual typewriter back in the mid-late 80's and an electric one in the same class.  I can't NOT do a double space.

The English language is awesome. Read this sentence and each time put the emphasis on the all caps word and see how the meaning of the sentence changes:

I did not say she stole the book. (emphasis on 'I')

I did NOT say she stole the book.

I did not SAY she stole the book.

I did not say SHE stole the book.

I did not say she STOLE the book.

I did not say she stole THE book.

I did not say she stole the BOOK.

Yeah, well, put an ellipsis behind each one and watch what happens
