I was thinking I may be ready for the Triathlon in Dartmouth the last weekend in September.  Where should I be as far as endurance to be able to complete it?  (It's a sprint triathlon.)  I ask all of you, because I have no idea.

You haven't logged any workouts, so we won't be able to tell you. What is your background like? What have your workouts consisted of? Where are your weaknesses?

Yeah, I havent gotten completely into that yet.  Gotta start that.

At the moment, I am biking for 45 minutes (been indoor on the trainer a lot lately, weather has not been good) and running for 35 minutes.  I swim twice a week (looking to increase that), bike 3 times a week, and run 3 times a week.

My biggest weakness at the moment is running.  I'm getting a lot better quickly, but if I were to sign up, it would be later on, I wouldnt be doing it now.  I do want to see where I am headed before signing up.  I feel like I would be good in swimming and biking at this point, but the run towards the end makes me a bit nervous.

Can you do at least all the distances separately?

Yeah, I can.  I'm going to the Cape at the end of the month, and I am going to push myself on the bike on the Rail Trail, just to see how far I can get.  Do I know if I can do them all back to back to back?  I dont know, but I do still have time to get it all together.

If you can finish the swim, you can finish the race.  If all you are going for is finishing, you can always slow down on the ride and walk portions of the run.

For sprints, the big question is: can you be confident enough in the water to finish, and to do so without flailing around and wasting your energy?  If not, sprints take two hours for the BOP, so I don't see why not.

True, but I also want to finish respectfully.  I really dont want to have to walk too much.  I'm such an egomaniac when it comes to this stuff, I'd rather die than slow down.

You're totally ready right now!!!!   Throw in a few bricks just so you're ready for the feeling.

There is no shame in walking or riding slowly, especially for your first race.  Or even your first season.  And a sprint is a good way to identify your weak areas to focus your training for next year.

To put it another way, you can skip the race and "save" your ego ("I could have done that if I trained for it".  Or you can do the race, and call yourself a triathlete ("I did it".

That's a good point: which one fuels my ego more lol.

I'm going to at least ramp up my training, and see where I am a couple weeks before.  I really, really want to do this.  I'm just nervous coming from 300 pounds in June, to doing this at the end of September.  Granted I am down to 260 already, but I just get nervous.

A brick is a bike/run workout. Say, an hour on the bike, followed by a short run. To get used to the jello leg feeling, and also simply for being able to run right after biking.

Ah, gotcha.  Yeah, I was planning a week of those down at the Cape.  Should I not do too many on back to back days?

You don't need to do them every day. Once a week should suffice for now. And yeah, save them for the day after an easier workout. I don't know how strong you are and how much you can take, others might be able to weigh in better. But for a beginner, I remember being told a brick once, maybe twice a week is probably good.

Sign up now. You can always say your not ready, no matter how ready you really are. Sign up so you are less likely to back out.

Welcome. The great thing about sports is that you reach a point when you must decide to ignore your ego and push through.  If you show up and race, the likelihood is you will surpass whatever your arbitrary goal is.  Fact: there is always someone better than you at everything.  The only question is when will they materialize.  Don;t listen to your ego.  If you can do each discipline separately, you can finish the race be it under 1 hr or over 2.  You will feel better if you do it, regardless of the time.

Like others have said, do a few bricks to get used to the feeling and just try to be consistent with your training.  Many of my bricks are a spin class followed by a run because that is what my schedule permits.  You can and WILL finish and you WILL beat whatever your goal time is due to adreneline and the rush of competition.  Good luck.

Like already said. If you're confident in the swim you can finish a sprint. As far as being respectable in the bike/run you'll never know until you try so sign up and keep s/b/r.

Like Wurkit said I wouldn't do more than 1 (2 at the most) bricks a week. Don't want an overuse injury 'cause that'll make your decision for you

You are ready for a Sprint. My recommendation is do a mini-brick almost every time you bike. Even if you run just a quarter mile, I think it helps. Also do a real run every once in a while after the bike and a bike after a swim. It should get you used to the transitions.

Have fun!
