Ironman Bike Ride, April 30

Extreme Veteran  475   Blaine, MN |  Subject: Ironman Bike Ride, April 30I am contemplating this race as my April race... but I am a little intimidated by the distance as the furthest I have biked is 45 miles.. and I haven't biked hardly at all this winter.. doH! however, considering I am gearing up for HIM by the end of the season.. (Square Lake HIM) .. should I be inclined to take on this race at 62 or 100 miles? 100 miles seems like a REALLY long bike ride .. esp. since I haven't done even half that yet.. prolly 62 seem more like my style.. so my question is am I just not ready for this lenght giving my not biking track record this winter.. ? Is this a fun race? I saw 5 resting stops (indoors) for the 100 miler... Just how lnog does it take to bike the 62 or 100 miles? given an average bikers apitude? Any bikers out there that have done this?? Just some general info on the race would be nice...

I have spent time on the trainer this winter but nothing longer than 45 minutes. I'll make the decision between 62 and 100 closer to race day (I'll register the day of) and weigh how much outside training I get in by then. |

molto veloce mama 9311  | Subject: RE: Ironman Bike Ride, April 30 we're doing the 60 miler at ironcrotch, put on by county cycles: http://www.countycycles.com/public/event.html ironcrotch is much more laid back, and goes through some beautiful parts of rural wisconsin. most folks stop for breakfast along the way, and at DQ afterwards. home made cookies at the rest stops. i love county cycles! i would talk to the bear about century prep. taking on 100 miles can be tough. you'll probably have more fun doing the 60 miler. |

How hilly is the route? What speed did you average and how long did it take you to complete? Anything I should bring nutrition-wise or is that pretty well taken care of? I have never done a ride over 30 miles and I'm starting to wonder what I've gotten myself into! Hoping to get out this weekend and try my clipless pedals for the first time outdoors - should be interesting! Thanks in advance for your help!  |

| molto veloce mama 9311 | Subject: RE: Ironman Bike Ride, April 30 i just saw your post now. ironcrotch is a wonderful ride. its mostly flat or rollers, with a few big hills (one near the beginning is a doosey - one of those hills where you think you're done, then go around a bend and see you're only half way!). lots of great folks do the ride. low key. home bake cookies. etc. we did the 40+ miler last year and it took us about 3 hours including stops for cookies and dq. why, oh why, does it have to be raining!!!!??? |

Had planned on doing it until about a month ago when wife informed me she would be out of town that day. Kind of slipped my mind since then. Usually I see some riders but didn't see any this year. I'm thinking with the really bad weather the turn-out was pretty bad. Anybody here actually do it? |

| Elite 3687 | Subject: RE: Ironman Bike Ride, April 30 O.K. so I am a moron. Reason I didn't see anybody biking yesterday was because the ride was today, Sunday. I actually saw more people riding than I thought I would. It really looked miserable. Somebody was pulled over and looked like they were having a tough time changing a flat in the pretty steady rain. Surprisingly most of the people riding didn't look as miserable as I thought they would. Congratulations to all those who rode and are probably still riding as I type this. |

If you go to www.mntriclub.com they have century rides scheduled throughout the summer. You don't have to be a member to go on the rides, but membership is pretty cheap and the ride is free if you are. If not the cost is $10.00. |

| Pro 4541 A farming town in MN | Subject: RE: Ironman Bike Ride, April 30 Congrats to all that participated. I did honk and wave my encouragement. I saw a few cyclists on 170th in Lakeville/Farmington and a few on Flagstaff in Rosemount/Apple Valley. Way to tough out the rain and wind. On a side note, I ran a 10K with my wife on Saturday (her first), and although the conditions were miserable, her accomplishment was terrific. She talked about it all the rest of the day (she's hooked! that means more tri gear for me too!). Congrats all... |
