Subject: Took my girl shooting for the first time.

I took my 11 year old daughter out shooting for the first time this past Saturday and she loved it. Used a little Marlin simi .22 with iron sights to an indoor range and she was a great shot for her first time out but of course she thinks she can do better next time so I think I got her hooked.

nice groupings.

Looks like she's got good sight-picture (fuzzy target, clear front sight post). But the up-and-left pattern suggests she's anticipating a little.

she needs a lot of work on shooting low left and low right....... She's not very good.

That's awesome.....great bonding time. I can't wait to take my oldest one out.

Very nice.  I've got a .22 marlin too and my kids love shooting it.  Heck, I love shooting it too.

Cool!  But with one critique...

Call me a hippie.  Call me new-agey.  Call me a looney liberal.  But I'm not a fan of firing at human-silhouette targets.  I don't like putting the energy out there that you're firing at a human being.  Even if you're training for it, you never actually WANT to be in the situation where you actually do it.  So don't put that energy out there!  Especially for a child.  I fire at standard circular targets.  Work just as well without the negative energy.

And I do see the standard rifle diamond-grid target... but it was stapled up against a human silhouette.

OK.  Said and done.  Back to the CONGRATS on your daughter being a fine shot!

I thought about that after but I wasn't too worried about it since she knew she was shooting at the target and not the human silhouette. I need the length of the target so she isn't shooting up but the next time out I can just turn the paper around so thanks for the idea.

After we did talk about if she would be up to the task of killing zombies and she said yes

Can't you tell the difference between a human silhouette and a zombie.

Just remembered I had a video of my 13 year old daughter shooting my .40 for the first time.  I just uploaded it to youtube.  For the first few shots I just put one round in and was ready to catch a flying handgun, but she did really well.  This video is of her first full magazine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tircoKOWh_s

And to get the controversy out of the way up front.  I am most certainly not a Hippie, New Agie, or a loony liberal so she was shooting at a silhouette.  Don't read into it, I actually have never given any thought whatsoever to using silhouettes or not because I feel myself and my kids are smart enough to know the difference between a piece of paper and a human.
That being said, I really like the shoot and see targets and primarily use them now.  Simply for the fact that it's a lot easier to see where you hit.

Funny thing about the video is that you can see that the first few shots were dead center because they surprised her.  When she started anticipating, it either went up and left or down and right (trigger jerk instead of trigger squeeze).

Good drill to show them they're anticipating is to take the weapon from them, unchamber the round, hand them the gun and say it's ready to fire.  They always flinch on the dry fire.  But it really teaches you to stay calm and "be surprised" by the fire.

That said, that's a great bunch of shooting there. I have about 7 years before I can take my monkeys.

My favorite part is about 31 seconds in. The grin and the giggle.

I taught my daughters to shoot, and before they went off to college, I took them to the range, let them put 4 or 5 magazines into a silhouette, which they could then hang on the wall of their dorm or apartment.

That is great!

I am going to frame the target I posted above and put it on her wall now.

Yep, i saw it too.  I have dummy rounds that I slip into the magazine that serve the same purpose.  I've also got a laser sight that I'll slip on when working with my boys.  it's easy to see the laser jump to the left or down right before they fire and sure enough the round goes right where the laser was.

I'm so going to do this. And frame the one of mine next to hers....with 10 shots in the chest, 3 in the head, and two in the groin......so she can point out to the "suiter" that her dad shoots too.

Friend of mine had twin step daughters that he had raised from age 2-3. One of them broughtthe first boy home and my friend took him into the den where is .44 Mag was sitting on the desk. He explained that he was fully capble of shooting the B@LL$ off a fly at 50 feet and that the young man should imagine what he could to to him.

I like your approach just a little better.

I don't know if that happened or not.....but if he would have done that where I grew up the kid he did that to, his dad, and everyone they knew would ridicule the guy and his daughter forever.  We all grew up with a shotgun and rifle in our hands from the time we were 8 or 9 years old...and had plenty of experience killing animals by the time we were old enough to date.  Some dad doing that would have been laughed out of town. I have 4 daughters, two grown and twins still at home.  I just tell the kids what the rules are....following the rules is not an option for them.  It's pretty easy to do without a gun.....I guess unless you feel like you need one. Laughing
