Subject: Amish MAfia???

Last night, I lost an hour of my life watching this show called the Amish Mafia. It was so out there that I cannot believe that it is even close to being real. I know that reality shows have to somewhat script each episode to some extent to make it interesting, but this was laughable!

4 young Amish guys that drive cars, have a stockpile of weapons, use manipulation and blackmail, have tattoos, beer parties and MMA type "barn fights"????

REALLY A&E??????

I think they are relying on the fact that the Amish don't have TVs and can't disprove the show...

I live in an area where there is an Amish population. One morning this show was the topic of discussion on the radio station I listen to. So much of what they portrayed on TV was a bunch of bunk that it's not even funny. Just another "reality" show that isn't real.

Like I said, I will give up some truth of reality shows for entertainment purposes but man, this goes overboard that it is not even funny!

Only way it would be better is if the theme song was Amish Paradise by Weird Al!

Kill your TV

we are snipping the cord (in our case taking the dish down) next month. Just happens our current 2 year deal with DirectTV goes monthly in January, not doing this for New Years resolution.

I thought about ending it early and paying the fee. Only thing stopping me is that we have family with lots of kids landing today for a week or so.... will be nice to have some kiddy TV options while the house is full. Come January they are getting their stuff back. I really like the quality of DreictTV's HD picture and their on screen menu too. Way better than our local cable option that has crappy HD and the worst on screen menu system.

We donated our other TV a few months ago, down to one in the living room left. Will keep it as I work for Xbox and *need* to test at home

How did this show make it to a second season with a better production value? Or at least the commercial appears to be produced better...and what is that?? A buggy blowing up? I enjoy suspending belief but is the Discovery channel really trying to pass this off as "real" or is that the joke and if it is a joke...your joke sux...boo

The buggy had it coming and it's an inanimate object. Sewer rats, on the other hand, have feelings. ;-)

Show = joke.  Characters = joke.  I live in the area where much of the show is filmed and the only reason I watch is because it's fun to see the local landmarks on TV and to see how out of context they choose to portray these people's 'lives'.  Lebanon Levi did an appearance a week or so ago to raise money for a local library.  I guess I'm OK(-ish) with that, just so the library did indeed get the proceeds and not him.

I'm sure the show is fake.

However my basement  and garage floors were poured and finished by 4 drug-addicted amish workers.   It's a far cry from a Mafia, but they DO go off the reservation, on occasion.

They did get the part about the Mennonite's correct. They are allowed to do a lot more than the Amish. When I was little I had Mennonite friends and I did a lot of things with them. We did a lot of fun things and they were good people as far as I ever witnessed. My uncle lived in Loganton, PA and I live within 30 min of Lancaster. I have met a lot of Amish people and I've never seen any that were not very polite. I viewed both Amish Mafia and that other show as basically anti-religious propaganda. Because I knew how absurd it was, I found it entertaining. That's just my perspective from my experience though. I know there are some bad apples out there.

Which direction from Lancaster? Loganton? I had friends in Loganton for years. I can't imagine anyone else on the board has even heard of it.

Funny Amish story from Loganton, these friends have three daughters. When one of them was very little, like 5, she saw an Amish woman wearing full winter cloaks, and said "look mama, a witch!"

I live in Snyder County which is heavily Amish and Mennonite. I am amused by people outside PA who treat the Amish like a tribe of gorillas or a circus side show. They are people like any other, with specific community practices and standards. They get impatient, they forgive, they work, they rest, they go to the doctor. They have drug abuse, spousal abuse, and animal abuse. They help each other, and the wider community.

They stand out by dress of course. But many ride in cars driven by "English" (Amish word for Gentile), own cell phones, and operate businesses that take credit cards.

Amish are people too. Mafia? Not so much.

Growing up in Lancaster I learned to avoid their buggy's on my motorcycle and whatever you do...don't ever put ice cream on their nose or Harrison Ford will punch you in the face.
