Subject: Help with adobe illustrator files...
Hi, I have a file in the most recent version of illustrator from my designer. My t-shirt guy can't open it as he has illustrator version 10.

Can anyone help me open it and save it in version 10? I don't own the software.

THanks!

Could your designer save it as a .tif or something similar to send to your t-shirt guy? I think a lot of print shops and such work in image files anyway...

Yeah, TIF are the best "image" files. I personally think Illustrator is the devil...I prefer InDesign or Photoshop to do most things.

My designer is very hard to get ahold of...he's a student in Bosnia, I havn't heard from him in 2 weeks! BEsides, they have a jpeg 500px wide, but I"m not convinced that a jpeg or raster based file is appropriate to make t-shirts from.

BTW, they are quick dry short sleeve shirts from Augusta sportswear if anyone was curious. Just sayin'...

Or better yet... an EPS or PDF?

Or, you can send it to me (IM me for info) and I'll do it for you (assuming it's under about 10 megs).

Yeah, but isn't TIF raster? Aren't vector files better so that it can be resized?

Vector is always better.  Rastor can be resized but you never want to go up with rastor images cause you lose quality.  Vector you can take any way you want unless of course there are rastor images embedded in your vector file.  File is on it's way.  Hope that does it for you.

Yes.

Hmm... I'm working with CS2, but i think I still have PS 6 or 7 and I also have Freehand 10.

I really don't work often with Vector files, so I'm not sure if these programs save the file in current eps or some legacy eps.

I'll give it a shot if you want. I'm only here till 5pm. PM me if you want and I'll set up a FTP account for you.

C-Ray -  Hope that does it for you.

Just curious. Did you save that file in CS2?  What format did you use?

I opened in CS2 and converted to AI10 and then saved an EPS for version 10.

If you draw anything in Freehand or Illustrator you are working with a vector file.  You can even export paths as vector from photoshop.

Yea.

I did some signage for myself a few months back and used Freehand and saved it in eps. My printer couldn't open it. Then I exported it as paths.  (maybe it was the other way around) Anyway, it took a while to get it all worked out so I learned that not all eps files are created equal.   Not sure what my printer was using.

I like working in vector when I have the chance, but that's not too often.

THanks guys for all your help. I used to work with all the vector software in college, and even did informational graphics for The Daily Collegian and won a college journalism award for one entry! But that was 15 years ago, I no longer have the software nor the time to relearn all the stuff.

You can click on the link in my sig to see the logo that I am using. I really like it a lot!

An eps can be both rastor or vector depending on the software used to create the file and the way the image is made up.  I use eps files all the time in photoshop.  Prefer it actually because it comunicates with more software than say a PSD will.  And export EPS files from Illustrator or Freehand MX (which is absolutely awsome by the way) for the same reasons.  The AI and Freehand will be vector where the Photoshop will be rastor.  Basically.  Rastor is made up of digital information in the form of pixels.  Vecor images are made up of points and lines.

Just now looked it up, but before then.  I had never heard of it.
