I want to volunteer to be a mentor mainly with a goal of being able to help with accountability and I love meeting new people. I may not be the most experienced here, but I can definitely help with accountability and encouragement. I know I'm not as hardcore of a triathlete as some others are, but I have heart and I can be a facilitator.

User Name: Sharona1973

Real name: Sharon (I know, creative username, eh?)

MY STORY: I started training for triathlons in April of 2006. I am a Type2 diabetic, diagnosed in June of 2002. I had been up and down with maintaining my health as a diabetic. Then my father died of pancreatic cancer in the summer of 2005. He was also a Type2 diabetic and also suffered with endstage renal disease and was on dialysis. His passing was a huge wakeup call for me because I know that I can't fight my genetics, but I can definitely put myself in the best position to live life to the fullest and be as healthy as I can be. Since training in mid-April 2006, I've lost over 20lbs and my last MD checkup was the best since my initial diabetes diagnosis. In fact, my lab results showed that I was at normal levels in all areas and my doctor is extremely proud of my achievements and wants to use me as a role model for her other patients.

FAMILY: I have been partnered for 6 years. No children, but we have two wonderful doggies and two adorable cats. I'm a physical therapist in real life. I enjoy blogging (outside of BT actually), I crochet and of course, most of my time will be taken up with training for the next season.

TRAINING and GOALS: 2006 was my first year of triathlons and I started training in mid-April. I completed 4 sprint tris in 2006 and have come to love this sport. I also love cycling and have done two bike tours, 45 miles and 60 miles. I also play tennis at the local league level. My goals for 2007 include the Houston Half Marathon in January, my first olympic tri distance, sprint tris, century bike tours and the MS150 Houston to Austin bike tour.

WEIGHT:  My goal is to get below the Athena weight class by the summer of 2007 and stay there. Actually, I'm more into looking at body fat and plan to get measured again soon. I would like to get below 22% body fat. However, I do have a goal of losing at least 10-20 lbs by the end of this next tri season.

Hi Sharon,
I'm Tierney, 24, and I live in the Dallas area. I notice you do races in TX even though your location is listed as LA. I tend to gravitate towards people who have a dog picture as their avatar.

I too am a diabetic although I have type 1 and require insulin. (congrats on your success with diabetes management btw!) I have been an off-again-on-again fitness buff and I am now trying to pull myself back into the "on" position. I have been relatively active my whole life but never really pushed myself too much. By the time I'd ever reached that level of fitness, my motivation would wear off and I'd slide back off again. I like to exercise and be healthy but sometimes I hate to do it. If I didn't have music I don't think I would be able to do anything--most of my workouts require an ipod (except swimming of course). I am very much a type A person and can sometimes use that to my advantage when training. I love planning and organizing and goal-making. I just think I need a little help with the motivation and follow through!

I'm an ovo-lacto-vegetarian and I have 2 pug "children." If anything, I like to at least get outside and take them for walks when I'm not too busy being lazy. I enjoy music, reading, and computers. I knit pretty well and I've recently tried to take up painting. I currently work for a bankruptcy law firm to pay the bills, but I'm planning on starting grad school in the spring for applied cognition and neuroscience. We'll see how training, working, and grad school will all fit up together...

My goals are to be more consistant with my training and stay motivated. I have a detailed listing of goals on my training blog. I've never really had a "weight issue" but I just want to tone up and be healthy. I also want bragging rights for completing a tri.

Hi Tierney, nice to meet you!

First, wow! I took a quick peek at your log and you are certainly motivated and goal oriented, all great elements to completing your first triathlon.

Second, you knit! Just kidding! Actually, I've been wanting to learn how to knit for awhile, so now I know who to go to.

Actually seriously, I definitely hope that through the next few months, we can keep each other accountable to our training and you've already taken a great first step with your goals. The next step is to utilize the training logs so we can communicate how we're doing with our training and progression of our goals.

There are also great training programs here to help you narrow down your focus on what you need to do to achieve your goals for this year.

I'm new to this mentoring thing myself and I'm just glad that we can get to know each other and meet our goals together. Be sure to keep asking questions. This way it will help me focus on what you need help with. As you can probably tell, I'm pretty Type A myself!! And I'm so excited to have you on this "team"!

Your pug is sooo cute!!

Hi Sharon!

Can I join your group? I need some serious accountability and someone to kick my butt.

I am a 41 year old female from Ontario, Canada. I have been with my S.O. for 6 years (common law for the past 3). We have 4 four footed children; two dogs and two cats. I am a full time shiftworker and part time online student.

I used to be avid about working out. Weights, running, biking etc. I did two duathlons in 1997 and had planned to learn to swim and ultimately do an Ironman. I used to be that person that could motivate almost anyone to work out. Since about 2001 my motivation has been sporadic at best. I'll get on a kick for up to 6 months where I am working out and feeling good and then I fall off the wagon for months at a time. I've tried different motivation strategies including signing up for races months in advance. What usually happens is I end up doing the race with next to no training. For example, I signed up for the Casino Half Marathon in 2004. I was doing well with my training until early July. The motivation waned and I then didn't run again until the race in Oct. I finished albeit very slowly and a very painful experience.

I seem to be on exercise sabatical again. I don't think I've done anything for the past month. I keep trying to talk myself to go to the Y (I'm paying $45/month and not using it) or even down into my basement where I've got weights and a treadmill.

My primary training goal is to work out consistently. Once I get over that hurdle, I want to learn to swim properly and start doing some sprint tris and maybe train properly for a half marathon next fall.

I would love someone who give me that kick in the butt that I need. I can kick back too if you ever need it

Hello Dee and welcome! Yes, I think we can definitely help each other out! I welcome a swift kick in the but anytime because I definitely need it. I think accountability is key to being successful with new year's resolutions (in general) and definitely in your case/history, accountability will definitely be key in getting you to be fully prepared for your races!

I'm glad to have you on your team and I look forward to learning more about you and how we can help each other!

Let's keep talking and narrow down what we want to accomplish in our next 3 months together.

I'm excited about this! Forgive me, but I have to actually get some dinner before I fade away! I wanted to make sure I responded to your post and to welcome you!

Tierney and Dee, I had a few questions for the both of you:

1. Seems like consistency is something we all are striving for in our training or workouts. I know the holiday season is upon us, do you have any workout goals before the new year? No pressure, just wanted to know what your thoughts were.

2. Do either of you have any specific races you were interested in doing for 2007? It can be a 5k, something small, a triathlon, anything. Some here refer to it as their "A" race and that means it's a race that you are really focusing on and wanting to really do well in and prepare for.

To make it easier, I'll start:

1. It's a busy week for me with Christmas coming up and I have a lot of housecleaning to do and a busy week at work as well. For me, this week my training goals are to run 3x this week for a total mileage of 20 miles. Anything else I do I consider extra.

2. As for my "A" races, as of right now it's the Houston Half Marathon on 01/14/07. I will have a couple more "A" races, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

Now your turn!

Yea I set up my log back when I was actually working out. You should see my September and October logs...I actually worked out back then haha. But its only been about a 2 month break so that's not too bad to get back into.

I've never done crochet but I picked up knitting with no trouble. Knittinghelp.com has really good online stuff. There are videos that show you how to do almost everything. I went to a couple of classes and supplemented with the videos...I bet you could do it no problem.

Looks like this is going to be a team of people who know what they're doing and just need a swift kick in the rear to get going. Hopefully we can all kick each other enough to where we eventually don't need it anymore!!!

As far as my strengths and weaknesses go...I've never had much trouble biking. I did a 35 mile rally back in the day and did a bit of running as well. I never swam but I picked it up pretty quickly and was doing that about twice a week for the last couple of months. I'd say running is my weakest sport because...its very hard for me to mentally overcome that. I dunno I think running just seems overwhelming for me. I also like yoga. I was taking classes at my gym but they switched to pilates with a different instructor so I'm going to have to see if I can figure something out with that. I would also like to do weights for each core group once a week (I split into upper and lower body) and then abs twice a week. I pretty much have that on my training log goals and thats what I want to stick with. What type of training schedule to you try to work with? Also, Dee if you happen to read this post, do you have any training plans in mind?

Thanks! I <3 my pugs...your doggie is cute too. Looks like a poodle? Hard to tell because the pic is so small. Maybe a maltese or bichon or mix of any of the above? I'm curious to know what breed.

tunidawn - 2006-12-18 9:29 PM  I'd say running is my weakest sport because...its very hard for me to mentally overcome that. I dunno I think running just seems overwhelming for me. My doggie, Mocha, is a poodle terrier mix of some sort. The lady who gave him to me wasn't sure and she got him from someone who wasn't sure either. I have another doggie, a sheltie named Mishka.

Running is definitely my weakest sport, which is why I chose to do the half marathon, to work on my weakness. I had to walk the run in my first triathlon...I think I had a 47 min "run" time in my first tri and ended up with a 38 min run time in my last tri of the season. I'm hoping that with increasing my mileage, my sprint tri times would improve, especially for the run portion.

I think the best thing to do is to just start with some workouts that you enjoy for right now. I tend to get overwhelmed sometimes when I try to get too many things going on at once.

What's worked for me is knowing what my goals are and working on them individually. For example: right now my focus is on running because I have my half marathon coming up. Starting in January, I'm going to add in swimming to start my tri training going because I have plans to do my first Olympic distance in June. After my half marathon is over, I will be shifting focus to more biking because of my MS150 ride in April. See what I mean? That's why it helps to have a race in mind so you have a definite goal to work on.

There are some training plans here on BT that you might find interesting. You would have to get a membership to get access to them, but it is worth it. Also, there are obviously other options like joining a local tri club to have others to work out with where you are.

I'm throwing a lot of things out there right now. We'll sort through them all, I promise!

Tierney and Dee, I had a few questions for the both of you:

1. Seems like consistency is something we all are striving for in our training or workouts. I know the holiday season is upon us, do you have any workout goals before the new year? No pressure, just wanted to know what your thoughts were.

Now your turn!

Ok to answer your questions:

1. My goal before the new year is to get a plan. One thing I do is end up eating alot of takeout or restaurant food. I like to cook, and I need to go through all of my cookbooks and start making my own food again. Because I'm a vegetarian I don't eat as bad as most people would with takeout. I end up eating alot of vegetables and not so much the typical "burger and fries." However, I do know that already prepared foods usually have extra sodium and other hidden bad guys that I'd like to stay away from. So before the end of the year I'd like to get my nutrition back on track. As far as exercise is concerned, I would like to make it to the gym a few times and take the dogs for several long walks (20+ minutes) a week. Maybe I'll say before January to make one spin class, one swim, and one run. That sounds good to me. I'd like to just get used to being active again before I go full force into a training program.

2. Because races are expensive and I'm about to start grad school, there are so many I'd like to try, but its hard to afford. I also need to purchase a bike...another expense. So for now, the only thing I have in mind is the Capital of Texas tri that's in May. Hopefully I can acquire something to ride by then. I'm probably going to do a 5k before then, but right now I don't have one in mind. I really did like your idea of changing your focus depending on which race is coming up. Staying a triathlete but focusing on running to do a half-mary and then biking because of your April ride. That's a good way to mix it up and improve on individual sports.

Hi Sharon.

Is it too late to join? Just now opened the BT newsletter. This mentor program is just what i need. I'll use your template to start:

Real Name: Jessica

My Story: I am 31 and have been active my entire life. I ran Cross country and was on the swim team in HS, and also swam on a US sanctioned team. No sports in college, but kept active with hiking, and surfing (since i was 6). 2 years ago, i injured my back at work and had to have 2 surgeries. Since then, i've completely healed (miracle doctor) and been cleared for any physical activity. I still do the stretches/stability ball exercises that i learned in PT, though not everyday. I even got to go surfing for the first time in 2 years last month!!!!

Family: I'm currently living with 2 adopted kittens, though i swear i'm a dog person!

Training: This past year, i have started slowly "getting back into things" in the gym, plus some hiking and Mt biking. I also try to commute to work on the bike (unless i oversleep). I am very lucky because my job lets me work out most days for an hour DURING THE WORKDAY, and there is a gym right upstairs. I have access to an indoor pool very close to work & home, too. This being said, my work is very demanding and sometimes i just don't get to take advantage of the perks. I need the accountability and support of this mentor program.

Goals: Short term, i have my eyes on an Irish 5k in Boston in March. Mid range, I would like to complete a Sprint tri sometime in 2007.....and am more interested in the off road variety than the traditional (if that matters).

Weight: Not too worried about this, though i have gained some weight around the middle this year. After discovering a minor Thyroid issue, my DR put me on the usual bit of daily meds and things seem to be returning to normal. Except for that weight around the middle, of course. Nothing some continuity in the gym can't cure....i hope!

Hi Sharon, and everyone else.

If there's still an opening, I was wondering if I might be able to slide in? I was very active in sports up until my sophmore year in college. Played any sport you could think of, all year round, and was in the best shape of my life when I was rowing, but life, stress, and everything else seemed to get in the way. Plus, I have always been more of a team sport person, so motivating myself to get up in the early morning to work out has not really worked out (despite having a very dedicated partner who exercises almost every day!).

My partner and I moved back to the midwest with our pooch in the summer, and since then landscape work, gardening, and walking our dog is about as good as it gets. I seem to be treating my adjustment phase to a new place with food, food, and more food, and that's not good. I had actually signed up to do an off-road tri in August (was planning on kayaking instead of swimming), and I fell off the wagon after about a month and haven't been back since.

My goals for 2007 are not only to start a routine and stick with it, but I would like to run a 5k in March, I'm attempting to do the 5-boro bike ride in NYC in May, and then a spring tri sometime in the summer. I'm not certain if I'm going to do a regular tri or an off-road, I'm thinking the latter, but we'll see. I too might try and do an MS Bike Tour ride since my mom has MS.

Thanks for volunteering to be a mentor...I think this is a great opporunity for newbies like myself.

Jessica and purdueek (btw, what's your name? ), welcome! I'm glad that both of you are onboard with us! This is going to be a great group!

Jessica: I won't hold it against you that you have 2 kittens! LOL, just kidding. I also have 2 cats, so we're good! Sounds like you have a great base/foundation to start training on. And thank you for listing your races. Off-road tris are just fine. I would love to get into those myself, but I have this fear of mountain bikes!

purdueek: my partner and I kayak too! Are you still in school? I completely understand about not being able to work out in the morning. I've been trying my best to do it myself, but I haven' t been too successful in that respect. Your 5k goal is a great one and you know I'll be rooting you on for the MS150 as I'm doing my first one in April.

Sorry I have to run, but I wanted to respond to you all. Oh, Tierney, I didn't forget you! But I really have to go out to dinner now.

Glad to have all of you onboard and I'm really looking forward to learning more about each of you.

Hi everyone!

First off, I feel left out! I want to add my dogs as my avatar too. How the heck do you do it?

For this week, my goal will be to run 3 x at 20-30 min each (depending on how the old legs feel) and two weight workouts (upper one day, lower the next).

Come the New Year, I would like to get out of my little shell and get back to the Y for swimming and various classes. I also want to get back that consistency with working out like I used to have.

In terms of goal races, I am looking at a Try a Tri in July (either July 1st or 22nd or both). My biggest obstacle for this will be getting my butt to the pool on a consistent basis. I was doing the Total Immersion thing two years ago and it was working really well. I then caught a cold, fell off the wagon and haven't really done laps since.

Another goal I would like to accomplish would be a Fall Marathon (looking at Sept 30). This one has probably been my goal for the past 5 years or so.

Tierney, I've looked at some of the plans but haven't really given much thought to any of them. Any suggestions?

Purdueek, are you a Boilermaker alumni?

Jessica, looking forward to chatting with you. Maybe I can rack your brain sometime for some swim help.

Talk to you all later.

Tierney, those are great goals. I need some nutrition goals as well. I look forward to picking your brain about good vegetarian choices. I need more veggies in my diet big time and I need to stay away from the starchy veggies. And yes, races can get expensive. But you really only need one or two to focus on. Is the Capital Texas Tri a sprint? I'll have to check my vacation schedule. There are so many races I would like to do, but things are all running into each other.

Dee, to get an avatar, you go to the "control panel" and click on it. Once there, you will be able to add a profile picture. You will need to resize to fit whatever the max memory is, but you can upload a picture straight from your computer. Let me know if you need more instruction. You've got some really good goals going there. Start writing them down and post them on your training log. Also, the Original Sprint (13 week) plan is a good one to get started, or else to build a base on.

And everyone remember, just go into it slowly. It's best to set small goals and meet them first to get some confidence and good successes and then you can really get into it.

In fact, I have a challenge for each of you. This is something that my partner and I are going to be doing for real starting 2007, mainly to help her get healthy and she is not someone who enjoys working out.

I call it: The 30 minutes for 30 days Challenge.

This challenge involves 30 minutes of activity for 30 straight days starting January 1st, 2007. The 30 minutes of activity can be anything as simple as walking your dog, or walking yourself to weight training or running, swimming or biking. The challenge here is to build a good habit of moving at least 30 minutes everyday for one month. Let me know if you're up for the challenge. I will be doing it with my partner starting January 1st, 2007.

Annie, welcome! If you need any help with setting up logs etc, let us know. Looking forward to finding out more about you! And we're the same age! Rugby season, eh? Wow, that sounds hardcore!

Well ladies, it looks like we have our group!

Sharona1973 (Sharon), tunidawn (Tierney), DeputyDawg (Dee), goofyfooter (Jessica), purdueek and annievi (Annie).

I am personally very excited about our group and what we can accomplish together and with each other. I look forward to a great start for 2007. The next two weeks will be hectic with Christmas/holiday things and I encourage each of you to take time to enjoy your family, friends and appreciate yourself, especially congratulate yourself that you are resolving to do something great for yourself in 2007.

Let's keep talking, asking questions and formulating our individual plans and goals for 2007. We'll get something nailed down individually and we can get 2007 off to a great start!

I look forward to all of your upcoming accomplishments, successes and victories!

Hi all -

Purdueek = Erin (or Eek, whichever is fine by me). And yes Dee, I am a Purdue Alumni, class of '99 (I was on the 5-year plan). You too?

This seems like it's going to be a great group. Sharon, you asked if I was a student - I wish! I love taking classes, doing research, etc. Unfortunately I am in the workforce. For the last 3 years I worked in the Federal Government, but now that we are on a college campus, I'm working for the University - public health related. Just started a few weeks ago, and for now, I'm working from home, which has its good points and bad points. Having a pooch napping at your feet while you work is definitely one of the good points.

I'll update my training log to reflect my goals for 2007, and let the fun begin! I can't remember if I'm supposed to add anything else, but I'm sure people will keep me (and everyone else) honest here.

Thanks again -
Erin

Good afternoon everyone! Hope everyone's day is going well. Sharon, I like your 30 day challenge...I think I will partake in this endeavor...count me in!! Also, I would be happy to share any nutrition info I could provide. Before I got my degree in biology, I was actually planning on becoming a dietitian for awhile and did alot of studying in that area. I too try to stay away from starchy vegetables because of the impact they can have on blood sugar.

Dee, I haven't really looked too much at the training plans on this site. While they seem like wonderful tools for some people, I enjoy the planning too much and prefer to do it myself. I usually research things- read articles, talk to people, etc. - and customize something for myself based on my findings.

Getting closer to Friday and the long weekend...

Hi everyone!

Okay, i've added everyone to my log access (i think).....aaaaaaaaand i changed my avatar to my dog Ivy. The kittens will never know. My log is all over the road. Sometimes i input everything. Sometimes i forget it for a week or three. That's one thing i know this group will help me with-focusing.

Dee: i would be happy to answer any swim questions!

Sharon: i just started mountain biking this past year. i wasn't interested at all, but once i did it....i loved it! just bought a new bike this summer, too. Oh, and count me in on the 30 day challenge.

Someone was asking about vegetarians....i think. i've been a veg for 18yrs.

Good evening everyone!

Sharon, I need help. How do I go about reducing a photo to fit into my avatar? I like your idea of the 30 day challenge. I am gonna try to get my partner involved in it too (wish me luck).

Erin: I am currently doing online courses thru Purdue in Veterinary Technology. We have something else in common as I also did the 5 yr plan ( University of Toronto) though I graduated in 1989.

Annie: Welcome aboard. Glad to see you're a dog person too!

Ok, so here goes. Tomorrow morning I will do a 20 minute run and an upper body weight workout. Now that I've typed it I have to hold myself to it. Dooohhh...

Erin: working at home sounds heavenly!

Tierney: I am definitely going to have to ask you for advice in the nutrition area. I have a lot of trouble eating a well-balanced and healthy breakfast. Do you have any good ideas? I just have such a hard time finding something to eat! Welcome aboard on the 30 day challenge! And I'm with you re: training plans. I look at the plans and then take what I like and then make my own plan.

Jessica: Do you have your log set up? I can't seem to access it if you have. That is a huge dog! Is that a Great Dane? I may have to pick your brain regarding swim workouts/drills. I need some good drills. As for mountain biking, I'm just afraid of falling off and getting a brain injury! My first mtn bike experience was in rainy weather and lots of mud. Some might find that fun, but for me it was just really frustrating!

Dee: I PM'ed you about an editing software program. I hope you can get your partner in on the program, it would do him good and help with keeping you accountable too. And LOL, you've figured it out! Now the guilt of not getting a workout in will keep you honest....I'll check in tomorrow! This was a trick one of my other BT friends told me about......blog your planned workout and then perhaps your guilt will keep you accountable! It didn't work for me 100% of the time! LOL!!!

It's a good thing the 30 day challenge hasn't started yet! I had to work late tonight and I have so much housecleaning and other christmas related stuff to do and I hope to squeeze in a 30 minute workout in after dinner!
