Member ![]() | ![]() What's up Folks! I am new to the BT group and the sport. I've been training on my own for a couple of months and have made great strides in loosing weight, building endurance and strengthening. Now, I am at a point where I need some extra push, a partner or Tri group (Mad dogs is too far). I live in New Tampa, 5mins from Flatwoods. If you are near by and want to train, bike, run or swim (I have a 25 yrd pool), let me know. Quick stats on my progress. Male; 33yrs old; 6'1"; 217lbs Currently running 6mi at 9min/mi pace, biking 20 to 30 @ 18 to 20mph, and swimming in open water 800 to 1000 yrds. As you can see, I am just starting out. Thanks for your kindness Shaun |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Shaun. I am up in that area as well... you are way faster than me on the run and bike but I need someone to do open water swims with (for safety) and would be up for that. If you're interested, shoot me a pm.

Member ![]() | ![]() Meekat Surprise... Sure thing... On Tuesday and Thursday, I get home around 6 to 6:30pm... We could plan something then or early in the morning if you are around at that time. How about a run or bike early morning at Flatwoods? Or, late night run? On the weekends Nicole and I are planning an open swim. You're welcome to join us. Let me know... Thanks, Shaun |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'll be hitting the USF pool in the mornings, so evenings may work out well. I have labs at the end of each day (they're scheduled until ~8:00, but I anticipate getting out early most of the time). After this week when I see how it's going to work out, I'll send you a PM. Where are you planning the OWS? I haven't been in the pool since November, so I'm in desperate need of some swimming practice. Sounds like you're right on my bike pace, and a little faster than me in the run (my last 5k was 9:12 pace, but it falls off fast with more distance). I'm also a clyde (30, 6'2", 230# and falling). With proper discipline in diet and training, I'm hoping to be in a position to flirt with 2:45 at St. Anthony's. Any specific race plans for you? |

Member ![]() | ![]() We are planning an OWS at Anclote Island. I like it there personally because of the strong current. I really work those muscles used for swimming. Imagine a 110 yard never ending pool. We would love to have you join us. We are planning for this weekend. About losing weight... Brother, at times it seems darn near impossible. I train hard week after week and eat right yet no results. However, I did drop from 235 to 217 in a matter of weeks. It's frustrating at times. It took about 5 years to grow this fat, I know it's gonna take time to take it away. I'm just impatient! Currently, I am signed up for Florida's Great Escape and Escape From Ft. Desoto races. My goal is to do a half iron by the end of the year. There's one in May I am thinking of doing or a half in Sept. We'll see how the olympic race goes.

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd love to get in with you guys for some training. I'm currently training for the Gasparilla Half Marathon but I am riding regularly at Flatwoods - usually on Saturdays before my run of about 6 or so, depending on how I feel. I'm currently at about a 9:45 pace for 6 miles since this is my first half and I'm haven't really concentrated a whole lot on speedwork except for my steady state runs each week but the pace is only about 75-80% of my 5k pace. I haven't really swam since the middle of December. I really need to start doing some OWS training soon. I was thinking about Escape from Ft Desoto just yesterday so I really need to get back to swimming soon. Anyway, let's hook up. |

Member ![]() | ![]() Great! The more the merrier! How's this for everyone... Saturday - Open Swim Anclote Beach - 1130am (I chose this time to let the sun warm the waters a bit. Last week the water was 63 degrees.) Sunday - Flatwoods - 7am early morning bike and run - I usually do two laps bike and one lap run which makes it a 18mi bike and 8mi run/walk. I haven't made it all the way around yet. Is anyone up for one or the other? Or, a different schedule? Having us all in the water for one will be great training for simulating the congestion of a race. Shaun |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have to check with my wife for the Saturday swim but in the morning, I had planned on a 25 mile bike followed by 6 mile run. I may be able to cut out the bike portion so I can make it to Anclotte Island for the swim. My swim fitness is probably awful right now and I really need to start back up soon but my wife usually has plans for me after my morning workouts. Sunday is my long run day and I'll be churning out 10 this week. Anyone is welcome to join me if you don't mind plodding along at a 10:15- 10:45 pace. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Shaun and the group. After much training, and chickening out before a race, I am making Ft. Desoto my first tri this year. I would be very interested in joining a group for some open water training. -Shaun H |

Member ![]() | ![]() Shaun, Would love to have you join. However, there is no group... yet... Perhaps due to the weather lately, everyone is waiting for the water to warm a bit. Nevertheless, I am going open water swimming this weekend at Anclote Beach. I plan to swim both Saturday and Sunday around 11 am until. The water will be cold so if you decide to join me, bring a wetsuit. The more the merrier! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There is a small group of us doing some OWS practice at Anclote River park on Sunday, 6/7. We're starting early (7:00, maybe earlier). Everyone is welcome to join us. I'd like to say we have all levels, but so far it's just slow and slower. Edited by Meerkat Surprise 2009-06-04 8:17 AM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys, there is a tri team called T3 based out of the Bob Sierra YMCA in north Tampa. They are having an informational meeting within the next few weeks, so if you are looking for a club/workout partners/whatever, give them a try. Im not a member so I cant answer any questions about them, but I do work at another Y and have read their flyers. I do know from reading their website that they give you 2 free training programs per year, have tri specific classes at their ymca, along with a running group and a pretty good masters swim program. (if im not mistaken, i think the masters program is run by a former olympian) check out their website at http://tampatriteam.comand/or email Jill at [email protected] for more information. Hope this helps you guys out. |

Member ![]() | ![]() Thanks... I think what I benefited the most from was speed work. I am not sure if this is the correct way to train however, it works for me. At the track I do a 2 to 2.5 mile warmup then 4x 400 and 4x80 with a slow jog cooldown in between each lap. Last is a 2.5 mile run cool down. That showed fast results in my run. For swimming... I found a group that does OWS. Once a week, I did a one mile OWS. On the week ends, I would do speed work in the pool. I do 500 yard warm up. 5x100 yd and 5x200yd 4x50-as fast as I can go and 500 yard cool down. Oh and I use the total immersion swim technique too. That help a LOT! On the bike it's the same. I share the week with long rides and speed work at flatwoods or suncoast. On the bike I go by time. I have a timer on my iphone and set it for 30min or so and go hard for speed work with a short recover. Only on my long rides, do I pace myself. Speed is always at my high HR zone. For my HR monitor it's zone 3 Cool down is like at med HR zone. For my HR monitor it's zone 2 It may seem weird but it has worked for me tremendously... I went to a runner's club to learn the speed workout. A master swimmer's session to learn what they do as well as the cyclist. Then I adapted their workouts to my own hybrid. Hope this helps... |

New user ![]() | ![]() I train in that area also. There is a swim team at the New Tampa YMCA I swim with once a week. Check out www.tbacswimming.com or google Tampa Metro Masters. I also ride Flatwoods quite a bit. I live in Land O Lakes and have access to a couple of lakes for open water swims if you are interested. Bill |
