Subject: My Christmas/Birthday wish list

Ok, so we were watching this great show on Bravo over the weekend -- something like Best 100 Movie Quotes.  I have to say that was an excellent "party" tv show.  We were all about 2.5 sheets to the wind, but had a great time testing our movie quote knowledge.

It made me realize that when I left my "ex" a couple of years ago, I left behind a really great movie collection.  My thinking at the time was, "Hey, they're VHS, and if he wants them that bad, he can have them."  I thought of them as a kind of ransom for my freedom.

Anyway, I've been slowly (very slowly, considering I've been only marginally-employed much of the time since then) rebuilding.

Some of the movies I was reminded that I no longer own are:
Airplane
Young Frankenstein
Casablanca

I know there are more movies out there that I "need" to own.  And I want to make up a good Christmas/Birthday list for my family and friends (which will hopefully prevent someone from buying me a copy of Beaches *cringe*).

What else should I include in my collection?

Ohhh... so many great ideas!!

Sleepless in Seattle
Steel Magnolias
When Harry Met Sally
History of the World Part 1

Which reminds me to also include Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail, and Life of Brian as well.

I have to admit that I haven't seen many of the movies you all have listed:

Nightmare Before Christmas
The Godfather Serries (holding my head in shame)
Saving Private Ryan
The Ring
Sleeper (and I like Woody Allen, too)
Dazed and Confused
Love Actually (I am adding it to my Netflix queue as we speak)
Serendipity
The Notebook
Rudy
Bruce Almighty
No Way Out
A Walk in the Clouds
Conspiracy Theory
Sling Blade
Old School
Happy Gilmore
Last of the Mohicans
Swingers
Team America World Police
Tommy Boy
Scarface
Carlitos Way
Mr. Deeds
My Cousin Vinny
A Few Good Men
Wall Street

Damn!  I need to get out more!  Or at least rent more movies!

Of course, I should list what movies I already have:
Amelie
Pulp Fiction
The Princess Bride
Brazil (!!!)
Jerry McGuire
A League of Their Own
LOTR (all three)
Christmas Vacation
Boogie Nights
Shrek
Finding Nemo
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Unbreakable (great, great movie)
Bowfinger
Chocolat
Willy Wonka (the original)
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (funnies all-time movie)
Matrix
Grease
Scrooged

I have a couple of others that I can't think of right now.

My family is very good about getting movies, so I want to make sure I put together a great list of "must-haves."

I have to chime in with the baseball picks...

The Sandlot...."You're killin' me Smalls"
Field of Dreams.... "Is this heaven?" "No, it's Iowa"
Bull Durham "I believe in long, slow, deep, wet, kisses that last for 3 days...." mmmmmmmmm, gotta love Crash.

Did anyone mention Better Off Dead? It's Shellee's avatar.. "I want my two dollars!!!"

oh, oh, oh, Say Anything!!! "i gave her my heart and she gave me a pen"

The Princess Bride "Have fun stormin' the castle!" and "Mah-wige is what bwings us together today."

And of course...A Christmas Story...."Frah-JEEL-ee.' Must be Italian."

Definitely agree with earlier posters about Love, Actually and ALL The Griswold movies...

A Christmas Story!  Oh yeah!  "You'll shoot your eye out!"

I love all baseball movies, but I'm still a little bitter about the Giant's lackluster season this past summer.

And I love The Shawshank Redemption.  "Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'."  Too bad they haven't released a director's cut or commentary verion of the DVD.

Being the "old" guy on this forum, I have a ton of VHS movies and have started to collect some DVD's.  Most of my collection consists of  movies from the 30"s, 40's and 50's with a smattering of more recent ones.  My favourite actor is Humphrey Bogart and I have most of his major movies on VHS.  Also I am quite partial to Greta Garbo, Bette Davis,

Among my list of movies are:

Citizen Cane, The Third Man, Touch of Evil, The Bicycle Thief, Casablanca, African Queen, The Maltese Falcon, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Thirty Nine Steps, On the Waterfront, It Happened one Night, and many many more.

More recent movies include:

Lord of the Rings, Stars Wars Trilogy, American Flyer, all the Quentin Tarentino movies, Breaking Away, etc.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  This was the "other" movie I couldn't remember from this past weekend.

"Where all the white women at?"

"What in the wild, wild world of sports is goin' on here?"

"Well, my name is Jim, but most people call me... Jim."

I never could understand why my mother wouldn't let me watch this movie when I was younger!

These are actually all the movies that were part of my ransom.  Adding to my list:

Citizen Cane
The Third Man (I love this movie!)
A Touch of Evil ("She doesn't look Mexican either!"
The Maltese Falcom ("People lose teeth talking like that."
To Kill a Mockingbird (I just loved this story.)
Gentleman's Agreement (I love Gregory Peck.)

Damn!  I'm going to need a giant DVD shelf now.
