Subject: Time to mow the lawn...

Just wondering, what's the earliest time you folks find acceptable/respectful to mow the lawn in the morning?

My personal belief is 8:00, but I've got nothing to back that up...by the way, I'm talkin' living in a suburban development.

Any opinions out there?

I think on a weekday, 7 AM is reasonable - most people are either up or getting up for work by 8-9 AM. Shift workers are just getting home, or within the hour, so they are not already asleep.

Saturdays, 8 seems reasonable. I usually don't get out before 9, but that's just laziness.

When I was a kid, my parents told us not to mow the lawn before noon, because people are more likely sleeping in. So I have so internalized that rule (which realistically is no different than a Saturday; and I never mind if I hear the neighbor's going at 9) that I still follow it.

I had a neighbor complain about 10:00 on a Sunday, but he's a cantankerous sod anyway. I think tat 9:00 is OK any day of the week.

The God of the Sleep-In Folk is a happy God.  After about 2 minutes of mowing, my 10 year old mower cut out!  I am hoping it's just a spark plug that isn't working.  Are there any "motor-knowlegeable" folks around?  I've got gas, oil, and air filter checked out and good.  How can I check to see if the sparkplug is dead?

Hold the wire on your tongue and pull the cord. If you have juice there, and can stand up after being thrown across the garage by 10kV, you should have spark enough for the plug to ignite.

Seriously though, you can Emory cloth the plug base, then regap to 0.045 (if you have a gapping tool) and try again. Some ether in the carb might also get you going.

Pull the plug.  Put the plug in the wire and ground it to an engine ground (away from something flammable).  It should spark in the correct place i.e. across the gap

Yo Pitt and Scorpio, thanks for the tip.  After posting earlier, I checked out one of those tip videos on-line.  I had my wife hold the rubber portion of the plug cap and hold the edge of the plug's metal against the mower's metal grill.  (don't worry folks, I had the kids step back for safety )  Anyhow, I pulled the starter cable and the plug sparked...therefore, I knew the plug was fine.

Long story short, I went to start the thing again after it cooled off...about 45 minutes after it had cut out...and voila!  The thing worked again!  Perhaps the Gods of Late Risers really did think 8:00 was too early!  8:45 is the new scientific answer!

btw, I got the lawn done just before rain started coming down!  Now THAT is a great feeling.

I never understood why people cut grass in the morning.  I've tried it a couple times and the dew causes the clippings to load up under the deck.

Trust me, if I had a better option, I'd wait until the afternoon.  We were out all day yesterday, and showers/rain were forecasted today beginning at 9:30.  I work tomorrow with obligations through the evening.  Gotta do what I gotta do.

Teejaay - 2012-10-07 12:22 PM I can tell you that 6am during the week is NOT the best time for leaf blowing, wood chipping, and chain sawing. That is when the landscapers start up around here. I wish to kick them in the shins.

I don't think that you would be aiming for the shins.

well, glad it turned out well Brian.  While in theory holding the rubber portion of the cap should avoid a shock...that's not always the case as I learned as a young boy helping a friend out with his minibike.  Not sure I would have had the do the holding.

Oh, and I figure anytime after 800am is good for lawn mowing.

If your teenager comes home drunk, it's 5am.

My parents threatened me that they'd have me mowing lawns from 5am-5pm if I ever came home drunk. That would be the only punishment. Or I could go without a car for 2 weeks. I never tested it.

Real answer: if there ain't a noise ordinance, it's whenever you want. It depends also on proximity. Here's a chart of the noises of different things. http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist2/projects/sixer/loud.pdf

70 dBA is conversational volume. Air conditioners are 45ish. So you're probably gonna be heard by neighbors within about 600 ft.

I agree with the evening also. Less dew makes the bag lighter.

A bag?  A BAG?  I don't need no stinkin' bag!

I roll completely bagless...it isn't the nicest lawn on the block, but it's mowed every week, and looks nice after a good haircut.

Yeah, afternoon's best, but it had to be done this morning or it would have been out of control a few days later...especially after the rain we're getting.

Bag is essential in some grass types. Or else you have nasty mulch mounds.

I've been without lawn for 5 years. Next year I'll be waging the Great War against crab grass with the rest of you guys.

Great War?  I bowed out of that war a long time ago.  I'm at one with crab grass.  It's pretty neat to see which type dominates each season.  It really does change every year.  As long as it's kept well-shorn, it looks good.  I think I'm about 30 to 40% tall fescue...the rest is a botanist's dream!

This would be better if the title was a euphemism.  Not sure for what, but still.

...well, after I was done I was tired, my back hurt, and something made it rain just as I finished.  How does that work?

Oh, pre-8AM on weekdays or 9AM weekends is not cool.

When we had one of the reel mowers, we didn't have to worry about waking the neighbors even if we started at 5AM.

Gas powered mowers, usually not before 7AM, but I wasn't opposed to mowing the grass before going to 8:30 service on Sunday mornings.
